I know this is a stupid question, but I have looked elsewhere and can't figure out which kind of transmission fluid I need to buy to top off my automatic 1985 740 GLE (358k miles and still running!).

I'm frustrated because I don't usually have problems figuring these things out! Living in Ford/Chevy country, I do a lot of my own work, including replacing the alternator a couple weeks ago.

Does your shifter have a '3' on it? (PRND321 or PRND21). If it has a 3 then it is a ZF and if not it is a AW70. Either way I believe it is Dextron 3.
