USB port compatibility
Hi gang,
My wife and I will be in Gothenburg in a few weeks picking up our new V50, and I have a couple of questions about the USB port in 2009+ Volvos. First, is there a limit on thumb drive capacity? I'd like to use a 32 gig drive so I can fit all of my music on there. And second, does anyone know what file systems are supported? I would prefer NTFS but I'll use FAT32 if that's all it can read. Because we're doing Overseas Delivery, I need to have the drive all ready to go before we depart.
Thanks for any information!

Hi
I just had the interface installed on my s80 2007. with the ipod interface included Bought a Corsair Flash Voyager 32gb memory stick....
turned out that volvo system requires "mass storage Device" protocol on the usb stick, so it didn´t show on the stereo. but boroowed a friends kingston data traveler 2g 16gb and that one works perfectly haven´t tried the 32gb version but it prob. works to. i just ordered a samsung mini drive 120gb to see if that one is compatible :-) saw in forums though that the usb cable for ex. drives has to be short. "power issues from the stereo to drive the harddrive" without external power suply.
Goodluck with your new volvo

Yeah the manual indicates the Mass Storage Device requirement, and also that FAT32 is supported. I ended getting four 8 gig drives so I could divvy my music up by (broad) genre. This ended up being a good move because the entire drive is indexed every time you start the car, which would be slow on 30-some gigs of files. Such a great feature...
Update :-) 120gig 1.8 inch mobile harddrive in the volvo now, with a couple of modifications with a software in windows xp.
Crystal clear sound, :-) seems not to index some of the folders but still pretty satisfied. Next quest will be to install a device that gives me a video input next to the rear view camera in the rti system, to maybe install a FLIR camera in the front to get the same night vision system as in the bmw 6 - 700 series ;-). seems to exist for the older systems before 2007, not giving up that easy though....

Hi
I'm trying to decide the spec for a new V50, the Stereo upgrade seems useful for the sake of the USB, (I do not have an iPod). I have tried various card readers in the dealers demo car and none work, - you seem to have it cracked with the 32gb pen drive. Could you answer some questions for me?
Is is reliable?
How long does it take to read the pen drive?
How often does it reread the drive?
Do you get any choice on how to navigate through the contents (by folders? by Artist, Album, Track?)
Can it play in 'shuffle' mode?
Thanks
Paul.

The Dynaudio upgrade is outstanding, you should absolutely get it. I bought a handful of 8 gig thumb drives (OCZ Diesels http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227332). This seemed like a good balance of quick indexing (takes 2-3 seconds), lots of tracks to pick from, and grouping of similar genres. It's quick and easy to change drives too.
- It is completely reliable. The only quirk I've seen is that some songs skip backward if you turn the car off during playback. For example, you play to 2:30 and then turn the car off. Next time you start the engine, the song picks up at 0:30, though the time still says 2:30. Some particular of the encoding I imagine. I only noticed because a song I know very well played past 7 minutes, and it's only a 5 minute song.
- Indexing takes 2-3 seconds for my 8 gig drives
- Reads only once after the car starts
- You navigate by folder. I believe it has shuffle but I haven't used that mode. Most of my stuff is albums, so all of the albums for each artist occur sequentially.
TIP: Because FAT32 is required (this might be your problem BTW), the sequence is determined by the order in which the files were written to the thumb drive. I assembled the files I wanted for each drive on my PC, and then used Robocopy.exe (included with Windows) to get them onto the FAT32 drive in alphabetical order.
Let me know if you have more questions, I'm happy to help.
Cheers!

I tried using my Sansa clip MP3 player in the USB port of my 2010 XC70.
When I plug it in the message is "connecting to device"
Then "device unreadable".
I have tried various system settings on the Sansa but always with the "device unreadable" result.
Can I get this MP3 player to work or do I need another type of drive?
Thanks for your help....TR

If it is any consolation, I too have had very mixed success with usb drives, my 16gb CF card works in one reader, but not another, some cards do, some don't. Read somewhere that they have to be set up as a 'mass storage device'. Also, the user interface to navigate the menus sucks.

Hi friends,
I have a 2010 V50 and a brand new Apple Shuffle. When I use the very short cable (that came with the Shuffle to download and charge the battery) the message said it was UNREADABLE.
My service department checked out the USB port, telling me that I need to buy a different cable from the Apple Store, a two-pronged instead of the short 3-pronged cable that came with the Shuffle.
Does this make sense?
Joanne

Hey folks,
Thanks for the input on this thread -- probably the most helpful post I've been able to find yet. Hadn't thought about using a generic flash stick; sounds like Volvo's software takes more kindly to that approach rather than mp3 players. Anyways, I have scoured the internet for a solution to this problem for the past few days to no avail. I own a Sansa Clip+ MP3 player and have been trying to connect it to my 2012 Volvo XC60's Infotainment system via USB since we purchased the vehicle. After selecting USB from the Media menu and connecting my mp3 player via USB cable, the display continues to read "Connect to USB".
I have tried the following:
1. Set my mp3 player to Mass Storage Device mode (as recommended in XC60 manual).
2. Updated firmware on mp3 player to most recent release.
3. Formatted the mp3 player.
4. Tried 3 different USB cables to connect the device to the Volvo.
I have confirmed that the file storage system being used on the mp3 player is indeed FAT32 (as mentioned in XC60 manual).
Any help resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated as using the AUX input for the mp3 player while driving is not safe as I must fumble with the controls on the mp3 player rather than the controls built into the steering wheel on the XC60.
Regards,
Evan
