Default Why is the USB port in the Glove Box instead of the Center Console?

New to this forum, and I just purchased a 2011 XC90 3.2 AWD (not quite in my hands yet, it's being prepped at the moment). I did not realize the USB port is located in the glove box instead of the center console! Any suggestions on getting the USB port over to the center console, next to the AUX jack? It's so I can plug my iPhone to it. Otherwise, looking forward to enjoying this vehicle for many, many years.

i looked at a 2010 on the showroom floor the other day and its just like my 03, the arm rest can come out of the car. and plus the USB is an after thought. this vehicle has been basically unchanged since introduction in 2003. i am installing a dension AUX/usb/ipod adapter this weekend to bring it to current technology

Thanks for the info folks. I didn't quite understand the pricing sheet, and I don't think I need to add any add'l hardware, except for a USB to iPhone4 cable. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Looking forward to discussing with other fellow Volvo owners in this forum!

Hey sampdoria, the reason the usb port is in the glove box is because the center armrest/storage compartment can be removed and has no wiring harness running into it (unless you have a DVD player in there). Also a usb port wont fit in the cupholder area due to space limitations.

As far as running a usb port into the center console area you would have to rig something up. If your really interested in getting a hub in that area send me a PM, and i can see what sort of setup might be viable.

You can add an extension and run the USB thru the center console. Here's a piece that would allow you to mount it in the factory center compartment. You might be able to find one of these locally.

A good stereo shop can do the labor for you. If you tell me where you live I could probably find someone for you. I'm a moderator at a 12 volt industry forum and I've been in the mobile electronics business for 25+ years and always willing to help, plus I just purchased 2010 xc90 V8 AWD for the wife. For full disclosure, here's my companies and I also have a company that does installations at new car dealerships in Florida. I currently live in Parker CO.

Great info audioman11! With the piece you mention, it would make the center console permanently fixed, which I don't ever foresee the need to remove anyway.
I live in 02476. Thank you.

I would call Magnadyne direct (800-638-3600, ask for Chris,he's the NSM) to see if they would sell it directly to you, I looked on their dealer site and didn't see any dealers close to you, but Chris woulds also know if he does. If you get one then I could recommend a dealer to install it for you, unless you feel you can do it yourself. Reputable shops are the safest and easiest in my opinion.

I just received a 2003 xc90 and am trying to figure out how to adapt my iphone/ipod. It has a 6 cd changer. Do you have suggestions on putting the dension in and how you get access to the back side of the console?

Thanks

Ok, this is news to me, Just bought a 05 XC90 V8, so the USB port in the glove box is a aux input to the stereo? if so how is it selected as an input?
My car has a cable added into the console box that will plug into an Ipod, but I haven't figured out how to select the aux input on the radio. Any help appreciated!
