V70 tdi - rough idle
(New UK member)
I have recently bought a V70 estate Tdi (1998 model) with 135,000 miles on the clock -lovely car to drive and very comfortable. Soon after I bought it the engine light came on and the MAF sensor was diagnosed faulty and replaced by the seller. Now the carhas startedrunning rather rough when idle in traffic - the revs drop a little and the engine starts to splutter - then it picks up again; this seems to happen on a 30-second cycle. When cloming down from higher revs (eg. pulling up to traffic lights with no pressure on the throttle and gearbox in neutral) the rough running also occurs as it hits idle speed - then settles fairly quickly to normal running. There is no engine light on at the moment.
The car is still under warranty from the seller, but being new to the V70 TDi I would like to knowa bit more in the meantime! Any thoughts, or anything simple I can check in the meantime? Thanks you, in anticipation.

Hello mate,
Although I am not privy to the V70, I believe they are somewhat similar to the 850s.
I would first pull codes to see if there are any. This may have to be done at Volvo garage, unless there are specialised independent shops in the U.K. Or, see attached on my 2nd reply for home-made OBD-II to OBD-I converter.
Lately, many people are having similar problems and the causes seem to boil down to one or more of the following:
- Retiring fuel pump.
- Retiring fuel pump relay.
- Retiring MAF sensor/connection.
- Retiring ignition components (plugs-wires-dist. cap & rotor-etc...)
- Retiring coolant temp sensor.
- Neglect.
I'll attach a reference. If you're handy, you can make your own OBD-II to OBD-I converter; see attached. However, the two documents are indicating different pins for the fuel control system and I am not sure which pin is the right pin.
