Default Volvo 850 or S60 : Fuel Grade and Mileage

What fuel grade is needed for the non-turbo 5 cyl Volvo engines ? ( Regular or Premium )
What highway mileages could I realistically expect from an automatic version of these cars ?

I'm looking to replace my 1990 240 and want to get something that gets comparable or better fuel mileage on regular fuel.

Any insight or advice appreciated !

Thanks ,

Todd ( NY )

87 (Regular) gas is fine. People will argue that we own Volvo's and that we should use Premium. I say no we don't.

If your car is turboed then I can see using the higher grades of gas, however I used regular in my turboed Volvo.

I bet you could see anywhere from 20-25 MPG on the high with both of these cars.

I get 20 to 25 mpg around town and 30 to 35 mpg on the motorway using 95 RON ("premium" - ie cheapest on in the garage) petrol. I've not noticed any difference from Optimax etc "super unleaded" (~99 RON) petrol which is about 5p/ltr more.

This is in a 95 850T5 btw.

Unfortunately I'm getting 11mpg at the moment because my air pipes are shot (at least I'm hoping that's the reason).
