Default volvo mechanic says, no.

My 1988 240DL sedan requires two repairs, but I can't afford both right now: 1) driveshaft must be rebuilt to replace three u joints, center support bearing/bushing; 2) broken transmission shift down cable must be replaced. Can the cable replacement be delayed for a while without damage to the transmission? My Volvo mechanic says, no.

I wouldn't put it off. See if you can work out a payment schedule with the mechanic. It's worth a try.
