Default Warranty

So my car has 82,500 miles on it, and my extended warranty is comming to an end.

I have two choices, purchase an extended warranty for 3000$ -3 years 40,000 miles - ,or I am planning to trade it in for a CPO'd S60R if I can find one.

what do you think guys?

Default RE: Warranty

Please note that this is solely my personal opinion.

85% or more of the time an extended warranty is a waste of money. Some clever guy/gal came up with this bogus idea some years ago and now it's everywhere.

There are currently 2 problems to extended warranty that I know of:

1. They do not cover scheduled maintenance items such as timing belt, tyres, brakes, fluids & filters, all of which can cost (if combined) as much as the extended warranty itself.

2. They often seem to come up with hundreds of excuses not to pay you, backed up by fine prints.

If it were me, I would ignore it and keep the money aside for scheduled maintenance items. But again this is only my personal view and some people might have had a good experience with extended warranty so hear at least 3 more opinionsbefore you buy one.

Happy New Year,

JPN

See, Im kinda fearful the transmission will junk out in the next 3 years (soId pay upfront for that repair, while at the same time being covered for other repairs), and thats the real reason Im only considering it. If the tranny got replaced now under my current warranty then I would not even consider it.

I see, in such case make sure to go through fine prints and should the gearbox does fail, be sure to have it replaced under warranty. I wonder what the failure rate is for the auto gearbox for S40. I believe other S40 drivers could give you better replies.

Anyway, Happy New Year and good luck,

Get gearbox serviced and looked at, get opinion of expert, and if about to explode "force" issue before warranty over?
I agree with what has been said above about extended warranties, put teh money into regular, preventative servicing, like fluids etc, and ESPECIALLY regular trans fluid changes. This is probably teh best thing you can do for an auto trans's life, especially a front drive car. Some front drive autos (our current Mitsubishi Magna) specify 40k km flush intervals on their autos. Which reminds, me, I have to do that job.....

Regards, Andrew.

Well, I made the decision based on the fact that he gave me 3 years 36000 miles for 2000$, what surprisingly is, that it DOES cover a timing belt break/replacement, warped rotors and many other numerous repairs. I also have a 0 deductible.

So from 82,400 all the way till 118,400 miles, i am warrantied :O, lol....

Thanks for all the input guys

$2,000 is a lot of money in my book. You still have to keep up with routine maintenance. If your timing belt brakes because you neglected to change it on schedule, I bet you play hell getting the warranty to cover the repair.

$2000 is a lot for 36,000 miles/3 years IMO...I doubt many volvos go tango-uniform before 120k. Although sometimes peace of mind has a price tag as well.

Heh, I scared myself into the warranty, just because of the past history of my car. But given the age of my car 2001 s80 t6, and the mileage, I thought the 2000$ for it was a good deal but maybe not lol

Given how many problems I had with this car, I just feel they are going to continue on and on.

I know a few people who have S80's of various years. They can be put into two groups, Those who still have warranties and those who wish they did. $2000 may sound like a lot for a 3/36 but then it doesn't take much to have a $4000 failure on those cars
