the best motor oil for volvo is to change your engine oil more often, don't wait for the 8k or 12k

We can all agree that best oil is clean new oil. Everything else is personal opinion

Royal Purple is up to around 8 bucks a quart in these parts, somewhat more than Mobil 1. My Volvos both use some oil between 5000 mi. oil changes so I've got them on dino oil (Delvac 15w40) until they get bad enough to justify a rebuild. However, I also have a thing for 4th generation (88-91) Honda Civic wagons and the ones I have owned had much tighter engines. I ran Mobil 1 for many years in these with no problems whatsoever, then decided to try Royal Purple after talking with one of their techs at the auto show. For whatever reason, my mileage went up about 3 MPG with no changes to anything else that might have affected the mileage. Same tire pressures, same spark plugs, etc.
Been running Royal Purple engine oil in the Honda ever since and I use the Royal purple tranny fluid in all my cars, since the trannies don't leak. The stuff is outrageously expensive and you can certainly get by with any good quality oil and regular changes, but if you want the absolute best Royal Purple gets my vote.
