XC90 Shifter 'Trigger'

XC90 Shifter 'Trigger'
Howdy folks, I have 2017 XC90. The shifter has a trigger-like part of the front.
I can't find any info what it does or how it functions.
Any knowledge?

Not sure on a 2017, but for many years the shifters on Volvos follwed the same route.
The primary function of the "trigger " seems to be to break, forcing you to order a new one and risk breaking your teeth getting the old one out.
I believe the secondary function is to release the shifter lock allowing you to shift the transmission.
