Default 1986 Volvo 240 with weird wiring

Hello! I am new to the boards, and figured I should introduce myself while saying the reason why I'm here;

I'm 22, and in the process of getting a 1986 Volvo 240 restored to some degree. I went to get a replacement battery, and discovered 2 interesting things:

First, my Volvo 240 does not use a Size 48 (6H) battery. It fits a Size 24 battery. That alone isn't much, if you find batteries with similar length and width there's no issue.

The problem is that the positive and negative terminals are flipped. On every other Volvo I can find a picture of the inside of the engine bay of, the positive terminal is on the left, when viewed from the perspective from the front of the car looking into the engine bay towards the back. Mine has wiring set up so that it's on the right. The new battery, as such, doesn't fit. Is there any reason why this could've happened? Is there any fix I can do so that the battery will fit?

Edit: could this be moved to the appropriate forum section?
