Looking at trading my 1972 Volvo 164E for a 2001 V70 T5 with 144,xxx on body and 80,xxx on the new motor. What are the common problems with these cars? I've heard about transmission problems but is this a rare occurrence or is is common?

Common. But that doesn't mean they all have it or that good service won't help avoid it.
