Hello everyone- I'm new to this forum, but have been a volvo-ite for many years (first one was an almost new 81 240; sold it after 265K miles 4 yrs ago and still kicking!) Have a 1990 740 since 91 that I'm restoring back to its former glory- been around a lot of forums lately looking for answers but not having much luck; maybe someone here can help- I want to replace my auto tranny gear selector with either a 760 or 740 turbo one (they look more beefier than the stock 740's) can it be done- anyone have any experience with that?

It should not be a problem. They should be almost the same.
The transmission are pretty much the same as well.

I don't see why there would be a problem with doing it. Just change the entire assembly.
