New Member - Picked up an '89 740 GLE Wagon
I never thought I'd say this, but I own a Volvo. I'm a General Motors man at heart, on my third Camaro. I also have a preference for Honda's.
Last week I was contacted by my Uncle who told me about an '89 740 GLE Wagon which was donated a few months ago to the Parish where he works. He said nobody wanted anything to do with it and I could make $100 commision selling it, or if I knew anyone who was interested they could have it for the price of scrap.
I picked the car up last week and listed it on Craigslist. I drove it around in the snow for a few days and came to the conclusion that for $360, I should just keep the car and put a few bucks into it. It my sense considering I dislike driving my Camaro in the snow for obvious reasons, and my wife needs her Civic.
As it sits, the car is an original, rust free, straight body California car up until 2006 when the owners moved to Ohio. The paint still shines and a good buff would really bring it out. It is a non-turbo inline 4, loaded with a sunroof. The tires have roughly 60-70% tread left along with newer brakes and a battery.
The speedomoter does not work, neither does the trip-odometer and odometer. The OD stopped rolling three years ago from what I'm told, and stopped on 207,752 miles. The previous owners believe the car has logged 20-40k since. There are no visible oil leaks. The car starts right up and drives well every time. The heater squals so loud it's unreal.. possibly bearings or a belt? There's a slight clunk from the rear when making right turns. The rear hatch won't open from the outside, but it will from the inside. The sunroof leaks when it rains. The a/c, cruise control and all power windows work perfectly.
I am changing the oil, coolant and belt this weekend. I'm steam cleaning the interior which will make it look very nice as it is in above average condition.
So with approximately 220-240k, how long can I anticipate this car going? I know it's hard to tell, but I hear these things run for a long time.

Welcome to the forum.
With good care and normal maintenance (timing belt, etc.) it could be good for another 200K. It looks to be in pretty good shape. If you don't know the last time the timing belt was changed I would do that right away. Also change all the fluids, maybe new spark plugs, air filter, etc.) Good luck and welcome to the world of Volvo.
