New to Volvo
Hi everyone, I'm Cliff and am in southeastern Virginia. I've been working with, on, and around cars most of my life, but this is my first Volvo.
I picked up a 2004 V70 with 246K miles for $900. I'm the 3rd owner, and it looks like it has been decently taken care of, until recently, when it was mostly just sitting in their yard getting a layer of crud.
Their older teenage son drove it for a year or so, which is why it looked like a cappuccino machine had exploded inside and was all over the carpet, ceiling, seats, and just about anywhere it could have run down between things.
I've had my friend who is an ASE certified mechanic of many years look through it, and he says the engine is in great shape and it runs really well. It will need front struts, rear shocks, and one CV axle boot is starting to leak, so I will replace all that in the very near future.
When I got it, the radio was dead, and the speakers had rotted with old age, so that has all been replaced, and I used a 10.1 inch touch screen navigation radio with backup camera, running Android 10.
The black plastic body trim had turned gray with age, so I used a heat gun and turned it all back to black.
While I was disassembling, cleaning & detailing everything, I found a pool of water inside, below the left tail light, so I used a towel and soaked it all up.
At first, I thought it was the window washer fluid tube leaking, but after washing the car, I checked, and there was another pool of water, even when I had not used the washer fluid.
It was maybe 6-8 ounces. This got me looking and I found a 9mm bullet hole in the top of the car, in the rain gutter, right by the edge of the tail light.
After filling and sealing the hole with JB Weld putty epoxy, there was still a small leak, so I eventually found the layers of body steel had slightly separated next to the bullet hole, so that got filled and sealed with silicon.
A month worth of cleaning, detailing and fixing little things throughout the car, I have given it to my girlfriend as her daily driver, and she is super happy with it.
Unfortunately, the day I gave it to her, the information display in the dash where it tells the remaining miles to empty, has horizontal lines that stopped working, and the display is partially unreadable.
My question is: If I swap the gauge cluster with one from a car at the junk yard, does the odometer mileage stay with the gauge cluster, or in the ECU? Will the displayed miles be different if I swap the cluster, or will the car's computer just display the miles on the replacement cluster?

Usually I have to drive to the dealer and get into the parking lot before something repairs itself.
