Default New volvo owner

Hi, I just acquired a 1980 volvo GL with only 105k on it! 4 cylinder, 3 speed auto. Real great shape with only a few minor problems. It starts cold and runs rough/stalls in the morning until it gets warmed up.

The other thing is the heater fan. The fan and/or switch appears to be broken. I've checked into getting it replaced and garages want $800 for the job! Looks like they don't make the 3 speed motor anymore so a 4 speed motor has to be used.

Does anyone have any instructions on replacing this motor? Lessons learned? I can order the parts but also hear that some modifications have to be made to make the new motor fit and it's a pain to replace.

Welcome me to the world of Volvos!

Thanks, Mike

I would sure like to know about the heater fan too, since I also just bought a 1980 265gle with a fan not working.
Had a go at removing but it looks a bit hard. I did buy a Haynes manual which shows the modification for the replacement motor which is apparently a bit different - looks like some filing to the circular opening and a hole for the wires, that doesn't worry me as much as getting at it or the price for taking it somewhere.
I was thinking a Volvo service workshop might not cost too much as they would be familiar with the job.
