Default Starting problems w 07 S40

My 07 s40 will not start. Before when turned the key it would turn till motor started even after key was released. Now it will only attempt while key is turned. Does not sound like the engine internal parts are turning over. However belts are moving when key is turned.

Not sure why belts would move without starter engaging against flywheel. But starter doesnt sould like making contact with anything..

2007s40 - if you are turning the key to the start position (ie position3) and you can see the belts moving, the starter is engaging the fly wheel. With that I am having a hard time following your observations. If you turn the key to position 2 - the dashlights should come on but the engine should be still. turn to position 3, the engine should crank (ie belts move). if you release the key back to 2, the engine should stop rotating if its not running... Now if your concern is the engine is cranking and sounds odd like its spinning freely - that could be a few things including a broken timing belt or perhaps "lawn mower syndrome" where the engine has no compression due to a lack of oil on the rings. Have you pulled off the timing belt cover to see if all looks normal?

Default Thanks for your help

You are probably right that it is a timing issue. Since the serp belts turn but not the cam. Just from looking down the oil fill cap.

Is it a given that theres head damage or is there a chance the engine is not toast?
