Default Tansmission fluid ckeck 2001 s40

Hi im a volvo novice. Where is the transmission fluid dipstick on a 2001 s40 1.9T located. At what intervals should the fluid be changed? What type of fluid should be used?

Hi. I'm assuming that you're talking about an automatic tranny.

The dipstick is located in a tube at the front of the engine (NOT the dipstick handle that is marked "Engine" and/or "Motor").

After driving the car for several miles (gearbox fluid needs to be at normal temperature i.e. hot), park on very level ground, put the shifter lever into every position & leave it there for several seconds before moving to the next position, then finally into Park. Leave for a couple of minutes then, with the engine still running, check the fluid level in a similar manner to the way you'd check engine oil level.

Fluid should not appear "dirty" - if it does then get your dealer to flush the transmission ($$$!).

If near the "min" level, switch off the ignition & top-up with Volvo's own fully synthetic automatic transmission fluid (they'll advise you which one, depending on whether you have the 4 or 5 speed version - 5 speed for that year I think), taking care not to over-fill.

Regards.
