I first fell in love with Volvo when the TV commercials for the Cross Country started hitting the airwaves in the late 90s - the classic Volvo safety, combined with performance and style - I was impressed
Then in 2003 - was travelling on regular weekend flight from Winnipeg to Toronto when I saw a brand new XC90 displayed in Pearson Airport while waiting for my flight back..... at that time I was decidedly anti-SUV, in large part at that time they had a reputation for roll overs, because of the way they were built on truck chassis. I saw the XC90, and I immediately recognized this was something different, The engineers had moved the centre of gravity, they'd lowered it down, the lines were completely different, the chassis was purpose designed - this puppy wasn't going to roll over. It would be 16 years - 2019 before I finally acquired my first XC90, a 2007 V8 Inscription. Originally bought on the Volvo Overseas Delivery Program - which (as I understand it) allowed for some nice little extras that weren't available buying domestically in Canada, like the 2-tone
leather interior. She became named Glitterande Enhoirning (Swedish for Sparkly Unicorn) Unfortunately living in a rural Canadian location, with a 50km commute late at night.... it was kind of inevistable that I'd eventually meet a deer. In late 2021 it happened made a mess of my grill and my right front quarter panel. Repairable - yes, but the insurance company would have written her off. So we fixed the headlight, stapled the quarterpanel and went looking for body panels. We ended up finding a 2007 V8 for parts for cheap - and managed to get that home, and while there is other work to do to get her road safetied again, I got another one an early 2008 (2007.5) 3.2 (GE2) to use as a daily driver while we pull her off the road for repair.
In the meantime, my bucket list includes a few vintage Volvos, a 1973 P1800ES (in Sea Geen 115)
I've recently fallen for the P210 Duetts
and I'd love to get my mitts on a XC90 Ocean Race (2006 preferably but I would accept a 2008) - yes there is one for sale in Portland Oregon advertised on Kelly Blue Book - it's just a bit far for me to go and fetch it home, and these days border crossings are a little scary
