Why volvo?
I'm negotiating to buy a 1995 940 turbo wagon, 100,000 miles in ok condition, for my soon-to-be driving teenage son. Is this the starter car one would recommend? I've never owned a Volvo before. The car looks good, but the ride is harsh, every bump in the road felt. Is this normal for the wagon? Would new struts (@$2,000+) make much of a difference?
Thank you,

Yes it is a very good car. Very safe car as well.
The struts might help have the ones in there checked and see if they are leaking ir just plain bad.
Here is a few pics of the safety aspect of the 940's This is a sedan and not sure exactly how it happened but I know it went off the road at 70MPH and hit a pole. He climed out of the car had some broken ribs and a few other minor things hurt but still walked away.
Also the car was still running till the tow truck driver turned it off to tow it away.

Struts for $2,000? What are they plated in gold? You can get aftermarket shocks/struts for under $800 probably.
Anyways a Volvo is a great car for a teenage driver, very safe and reliable.

Thank you for the support!
The struts on-line run almost $500 each (the parts site I visited). Can I get 4 for a good deal less cost? They were listed as OEM struts.
Yes, the struts are greasy-black in the front, but the car does not "bounce" when pushed down on a fender. It comes back up and stops.
The struts appear to be the ones originally installed. I have the owner's service records with no mention of struts.
I'm on the 3rd set of Bilsteins on my Chevy (1993 K1500 Z71), which rides a lot smoother than the wagon does. My hope is for a more controlled steering feel for my son while driving the 940.
But will I get this with new struts? If I do install new struts, what other suspension components is good to replace at that time?
Thank you again for any advice,
