GAS PRICES!!
I have been told today that in 8 weeks red diesel will be the same price as white diesel. Here in the uk that is.Have you heard this billofdurham mate. And on the news people are robbing vegetable allotments over here. Where the hell is this taking us?Sick or what?

I have no doubt that a lot of red will now be used on the road and HM Revenue and Customs fuel testers will be extremely busy. Never fall foul of those people as their powers are amazing.
I got dipped yesterday by the boys and girls from HMRC (Her Majestys Revenue & Customs) as I was in our Landy, whilst I was clear there were at least three other vehicles sat in this layby that were being impounded and the drivers were having their collars felt, two for using "cherry", one running on neat "kero" not that he would be running for long on that mind you! Kerosene - heating oil/jet fuel -unlike diesel isn't a self lubricator so injection pumps tend to lunch themselves after a while running kero, key is tomix engine oil to it.
Was speaking toa couple of the customs officerswhilst waiting for the results to come back on my test and asked were there many running SVO (straight vegetable oil) or a partial mix of SVO and they said that around 10% of the dips in the last month are running with an element of SVO in them up from 0.5% two months ago! They had stopped a chap twenty minutes before me who was running at a 50/50SVO/White Diesel mix in a 200TDi Landrover 110 - the chap produced a full set of invoices, documentation and logsfor the SVO, stated that he had used just over 3500 litres of it so far that year and had produced a receipt for the duty paid to HMRC on the excess over your 2500 allowance. The driver had stated that despite all the hassle of mixing it up, buying the SVO (in 40 gall drums apparently) and handling the paperwork, etc,his fuel was costing him roughly £1.00/Litre over the year(including the excess duty) - no mods to the vehicle either simply alters the proportion of SVO to diesel when the weather gets colder down to 10/90% in the dead of winter to stop waxing. Customs officers said they were all for it, and that it was a pleasure to see someone who had his admin sorted out in anticipation of being checked and even welcomed it, the ones they really chase are the habitual users as chances are they will have something else hookey in their background (benefit fraud, tax evasion, stolen goods, no insurance, etc) the problemis that these muppets expect to get stopped so are driving around in vehicles worth a couple of hundred quid so they don't mind getting them impounded.
Doing some calculations this morning and a 1037mile business trip has just cost me £163 in Diesel ($325) as a company we now break the fuel out of our invoices and show it as a separate amount at cost when invoicing clients, we also include copies of the fuel receipts to proove it. That was we are not constantly racheting our prices up and the clients realise that they are being treated fairly as everyone is in the same boat.
Cheers

About seven miles from where I live a farmer's wife has died of a heart attack when she disturbed thieves stealing diesel from the tank at her farm. In an unrelated incident thieves, again trying to steal diesel at a farm, left the tap open on the tank and about 7000 litres of diesel ran out onto the ground, poisoning the land.
In both cases this would be red diesel which is intended for non-road use.
Things are really going from bad to worse and our leaders are not in the least concerned.

George Miller must have known something way back in 1979, when he made "Mad Max" the Movie.

Hi guys,
Once again it's been awhile since I've posted. I need to stop letting things get in my way (work, school, family) and spend more time on here. I saw this gas prices thread and thought I'd throw up a link.
I'm getting ready to start an experiment/challenge on hypermiling, which is an attempt to get better gas mileage by changing driving habits. I'm going to post the results and documentation on a blog I started. Later, I'm going to add some repairs I've done to my various cars and other car-related things, but for the next couple of weeks, I will be focused on the hypermiling challenge.

Have any of you tried hypermiling? Any thoughts on it?

hypermiling
Make sure the vehicle is in top condition with tyres correctly inflated aswrong pressures will waste fuel.
No harsh acceleration andno severe braking or you may as well pour your fuel down the nearest drain.
Be in the correct gear at all times.
Apply total concentration to your driving.
Anticipate other road users, if brake lights come on 10 vehicles in front ease off the accelerator to avoid too much braking.
React to situations as they develop not after they are full blown.
Easy enough to do and it will save fuel.
That's funny because I picked up most of my bad habits by watching my dad's driving. His method was the opposite of hypermiling and so he found himself pulled over often. I think he felt like he'd failed me when I got into my first wreck. His words were, "don't you know how to drive out of a skid?" Then he wanted to take me out and show me how to do it.
Anyway, he was born in 1950 (and died in 2003), so he was learning to drive in the 60's as well, but I guess he had a different sort of instructor than you did.
I'm hoping to try and do a controlled experiment to determine approximately how many gallons of gas I waste each year using my normal driving habits. That should compel me to change some of the worst ones, save some money and hopefully lower my consumption (with the benefits that come along with that).

hello again johnpoach,
I still have a difficult time understanding how everyone there can afford to buy diesel or petrol, given those prices. Just mindboggling for me.I know there are difference such as better fuel efficiencyand other factors, but still.... 6 Pound a gallon.. wowwowwow. I'm surprised there hasn't been a revolution over there (hoping not to still up old wounds with that
)
I tried to reply back to you here some time ago when you made a comment to me, but the forum problems of the time wouldn't let me post a reply. No hard feelings I hope.
Cheers, and have a pint for me one of these days, and I'm not talking petrol
and yesssssssss, I am sikk of it (the petrol prices, not the other, hehe)

It was in response to the gas prices, and maybe that in itself is nasty enough.
I hear in the news in the past couple of days about the scandal involvingsome of ourgovernment officials who were accepting bribes and sex from oil companies, and, also, there is the one about the fellow (in the UK I think) who was employed by Halliburton and was living in London, or at least had a London home. He's apparently going to turn state's evidence against Halliburton.
Maybe the whole thing will come down like a house of cards? We should be so lucky!

In the NE of England prices vary from £5.15 to £5.53 for petrol and £5.45 to £6.24 for diesel.
I doubt the prices will drop much more as OPEC has ordered its members to reduce output. Naturally the price per barrel went up today.

At about $250 a month for gas now
