How many times have you almost died in your car..
I've got 2 distinct ones.

Latest: Driving home from a car meet i got into a friendly competition with an Altima and a RX-8. so we were going around 95 on the empty highway as we started to enter a very large bend. This highway is 5 lanes so by no means small. Anyway the RX goes across 3 lanes to the right and makes the turn without any problems. The altima was about 40 feet infront of my and in the left lane, he goes into my lane to start the turn. All the sudden i just see the Altima's taillights fly up and in my mind i just went "Oh WTF?" then i realized that i should be flipping. so i slammed on my brakes just as i saw about a 7inch tall black lump on concrete on the very crest of the hill entering this turn. I smacked into the bump around 85 and since i was locked up my front only hopped up a little. But my back end, i had no gas in the tank.. Well it flew up and around and i landed facing the wrong way, then car righted itself almost tipping over and i skidded into the shoulder fine except my back tires had to replaced a day later.
The altima was not so lucky. He flipped around and slammed *** first into the concrete guard rail and basically totaled the car. wheels locked and all. I ran over to him, he was okay, so i just peaced out not wanting a racing ticket.
So this ended my racing antics for good.
And other story some other time.

And other story some other time.
later that night an old accord wagon smashed his oil pan, spun out into the far right lane and was stuck there. 15 seconds later a mustang hit that same bump, he said, around 95 and just got straight airborne. He slammed into the back seat of the accord and ripped the roof and rear seat and basically tore the car in half, then slammed into the wall at a slight angle but still head on at about 35. His rollcage and engine drop was only thing to really save his life, though he broke his legs in 7 different places including a compound fracture where the clutch pedal entered his shin.
In my 850, just once and hopefully that'll be my only time. Playing on the highway with a CLS550 blasting through traffic, I just got my ECU reflash not two days earlier so i'm not doing too bad against him, deep into the triple digits...my exit is coming up FAST but I did not notice b/c of the hype of "holding off" a V8 Benz, traffic is moderate to severe, i'm in the far left lane, getting on the brakes and changing lanes to exit, while at the same time not wanting to brake too hard to upset the weight balance on the rear tires and go sideways.
While i'm trying my best to slow down as quick and painless as possible a Camry packed with about 6 heads is in the far right lane (understand the whole time i'm slowing down from the far left, passing cars and anticipating) this guy has to be doing no more than 60mph.
My car feels like it's at the limit of adhesion before the back end gets loose but I have no other way out but to turn the steering to the right even harder and get on the brakes that millimeter more...
Let me tell you, this had to have been the longest 7 seconds of my life from being deep in the triple digits, to anticipating moderate to severe traffic conditions, AND avoiding that one slow driver who's just minding his own business.
I must have passed the Camry with maybe an inch to spare from my driver fender and his passenger quarter panel but now I have to straighten up and not plow into the wall right before my exit so I turn the wheel to the left, floor the throttle and hope for the best. I did end up straightening out the T5 and exiting but man was my heart in my forehead while I was sitting at the light thinking how close to killing an innocent family I was..
Moral of this novel, be smart, use your brain and listen to the voice in your head that screams EASE OFF and live to run another day.

Same legal disclaimer as above: Stories in this post are to be considered fictional anecdotes for entertainment purposes only and in no regards represent factual incidents. And boy was it "entertaining". 100mph in acura nsx and lost rear end, wound up facing oncoming but still going in forward direction. Spun at least three times. No one around so no real "danger" to anyone else. Couple of near misses with accidents where swerved around/drove through and hit nothing. And almost most scary was with bike CBR 954rr on a corner at about 60mph when hit road grit and lost whole back end. Before flat and sliding on side, rear found traction and came out of the Very severe and unintentional drift. Most scary was on same bike and an odd fluke. At about 70 and accelerating pulled front up and held it for second before a gust of wind caught me and took bike to 11:45. Didn't think front was coming down from that one--very lucky.
How many times have I almost died in my car... I guess every day with these crazy non driving people that pay no attention to the cars around them and think the 23 cents that they paid in taxes gives them the right to do whatever they want on the road.
1995 Volvo 960 - no speed or distraction involved:
Besides that, the one time that I was really messed up was when I got on the freeway through town during rush hour. I was trying to get from the slow-far right lane to the center or left lane. I just got on and was behind a Explorer. Glanced over my left shoulder and seen that it was NOT clear to merge left so I look ahead, took a second glance as someone passed me, and just as I took my third glance I seen the Explorer jult to the left. Well, the left lane was still not really clear to merge and when I looked a head I seen a fully inflated truck tire in my lane. Well I creeped to the left while bracing myself for the impact (there was no way I could brake in time). When I hit the tire, the right side of the car flew into the air. Now I'm going down the freeway, during rush hour, on my 2 left wheels. I drive for about 50 yards like this and I realize the car is heading off the road toward a very steep (downward) inbankment, probably a 50 feet drop. So I carefully turn the wheel towards the left trying to make sure I don't tip the car down to fast, I didn't want to flip it, and the car slams to the ground. The right front wheel was almost torn off so the car was still pulling towards the cliff (no guard rail). Well, I was now braking and keeping the car from going all the way off the road and just as I look up I see a guard rail in front of me. The guard rail was attached to a small overpass the went over a street that was below. When I hit the guard rail the right side of the car was tossed back into the air and I was still traveling forward on to the overpass on my 2 left wheels. By this time I was moving very slow so I jerked the wheel to the left and sat the car back down on all fours. The car quickly stopped against the guard rail just as it connected to the bridge.
I sat there a few seconds as stuff in the car finally stopped flying around. I moved my head a little to see if I was in any pain and I seemed fine. I then checked my mirror and popped the door open. As soon as I did there was a couple of guys there in amazement. They were so excited and said that they had never seen anything like it. I was feeling as if I just got off a roller coaster and said to them "I wasn't trying to put on a show, just trying to keep it from going over the cliff". When I looked around I noticed a Caddy behind me pulled off the road behind me with 2 flat tires, they it the wheel as well.
The 960 was totalled and I has NO PAIN at all. So about a week later, I purchased another 960 that looked exactly like it. My friends though I got my car fixed.
After 31 years and probably 1,000,000 miles on the road, I could write several close call storied but this was actually an accident that I could have went over the bridge on.

3 party bean burritos, 2 pickled eggs and a road trip to Tulsa in the 144. Raining, windows up. Interior air quality took a rapid nose dive. Eyes were watering, stomach churning. Struggling with the manual window...pulled off on the side of the road...burst out of the car into a steady down pour of rain...never has fresh air smelled so good...much preferable to the atmosphere within the car...
