I'm saying "Good-bye" to her.
My 1987 Volvo 740 GLE. I bought her in November of 1992. I needed a good, solid, dependable car to get me back and forth from Dallas to LA - alone - several times. She was clean and tight. I had never owned a Volvo before but the first time I drove her I fell slap in love. We've never parted until now.
On my first trip, I was just past a major truck stop outside of Phoenix. It was about 1:45 - 2:00 PM. I had noticed during my trip that she tended to feel as if she were going slower than she actually was (more than a few times after the beginning of he trip I had to slow down after noticing I was going at least 15 to 20 MPH over the limit). Anyway, I was coming up on a 18-wheel flatbed in the right lane deadheading somewhere, when, just as I was coming up to the left rear corner of the trailer, I noticed the driver leaning - nay, laying - in the corner of the cab against his door. It appeared that he was taking a nap after a long lunch. We were doing about 70. I then noticed his left front wheel starting to weave a little and then start across the lane line. As I started honking, I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw an 18-wheeler coming right up my tailpipe. That guy noticed what was happening and started to blow his horn. I had nothing to do but punch it.
The Volvo took over, my head snapped back and we zipped the hell out of there ... Newton be damned.
I had also never owned a 4-cylinder engine before - especially one with a ZF German tranny. Well, I swear to you that I stopped at the next gas station, raised the hood and counted the plugs. I swear.
We've been together all these years, but as the days went by and I got older, I couldn't shade tree her any more. I took her to a place that eventually messed her up and then they walked away.
She's been parked for over a year and now, because of "the times", it looks like I'll never be able to drive her again. I have to say, "Good-bye".
I hope that this doesn't bring anyone down. I had no one to tell this to who would understand - other than with other people who love their Volvos.
She's not gone yet - I have to set my mind right for about the next week. I'm going to give her to Cars for Kids.
Everyone, if you can, go out tonight and pat your car. And, when you do, say "Thanks".
