2nd. mid-30's Armstrong Siddely preselector model. (U.K) Used as a fun car - would be worth a small fortune now.
3rd. 1955 Vanguard Spacemaster (U.K)
4th. 1965 Humber Super Snipe (U.K)
5th. 1967 Ford Zodiac Mk 1V (U.K) - bought while in Zambia, Central Africa
6th. 1970 420G Jaguar (U.K) developed a faulty auto transmission - bought and sold in Zambia.
7th. 1987 Mk10 Jaguar - purchased in Zambia but brought back to Australia with us and used as the family car for a number of years.
8th. 1974 Leyland P6 (a 100% Australian designed car - designed specifically for Australian conditions) A great car - but stopped being manufactured when Leyland (U.K) went under.
9th. 1975 Chrysler Regal (an Austalian made Chrysler). Powerful V8 - but didn't have much else going for it though.
10th. 1984. Holden Commodore SLE (manufactured by General Motors Holden, Australia). Bought it brand-new. A dual fuel (petrol/LPG) vehicle with all the bells-and-whistles plus a zippy little V8 under the bonnet which could out-perform many larger V8's.
11th. 1989 Toyota Cressida (Japan). Bought it 18 months old and converted it to dual fuel. A reliable, trouble-free car.
12th. 2001 Nissan Twin-Cab (Japan) Bought new, and still have it. Never misses a beat.
13th. 1988 240 GLT Volvo wagon (Sweden - Swedish built) Exceptionally reliable and still going strong at 450,000 kms.
14th. 1996 T5 Volvo wagon. (Sweden - Belgian built) 200,000 km. A real bitumen burner, but can be a little precocious at times due, I guess, to its complexity but, never-the-less, still a very nice vehicle and a superb tourer.

What's next? Probably another Volvo somewhere down the line.

 

The first car I ever owned was a 1955 Chevy, 2 door coupe, it was unique in that it had every color in the rainbow painted on it. I paid 200.00 for it in 1965, while stationed at Wurtsmith AFB, Michigan. It ran really well, except for the column shift would get hung up between gears, I would have to stop get out and un-jam them and go on. I kept it for about a year, then I received orders for an assignment to Spain. I then got rid of it, and got a 1963, Corvair Spyder 900, with 4 in the floor. Believe it or not it was a great little car, wish I had it today, now they are a collector car.

 

1968 Mustang hardtop. 302, C4 transmission, BMW montreal blue paint, 17" wheels...hot car for a 16 year old, but looking back, of course, it was overdone. Badly.

 

1995 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. Tan exterior on tan leather interior, no airbags, lots of space and a big lazy V8. It was purchased new as the family SUV and then when I went away to college in 2003 and my parents handed me the keys. It was supposed to then be passed down to my younger brother for school but my father sold it.
Many years of reliable service except for the fuel pump dying on the highway when I was driving through Connecticut but aside from that it never gave the family any issues.

First car I bought was a 1968 BMW 2002. Came with a 1600cc engine so my first project was to swap in a proper 2000 engine. Buried the old block in a buddy's barn (hey it was 1978 - no thinking green). Last year saw my buddy at a HS reunion - when his parents sold the house a couple years ago, his dad asked if he knew why there was an engine buried in the barn...

 

first car given to me was a 1975 volvo 244 my dad blew the trans before i could have it. first car i started to buy was a 78 elcamino the got tied up in the persons divorce that i was buying it from so i got my money back never drove it. first car i owned was a 79 camaro z28. Bought that in high school never got the paperwork squared away and i lost the release of interest papers so barley got to drive that. First car that was mine to drive was a 86 2wd Toyota pick-up with a 22re and manual trans. Loved that truck i used to spank hondas all the time.

Rusty around the bottom, 1961 Cadillac Series 75 Formal Limousine. Bought it myself for around $550. Back then you could fill up the tank with a five dollar bill and get some bills back in change.
For a kid in high school it was as good as a van !!

My first car was a 1960ish Austin Cambridge. A lovely car was like driving a brick shed and no power steering, god it was hard work parking

 

Seeing this car brings back College memories back in the late 80s. I was part of the international students group, most of them from Europe. Six of them rented a house and needed a car to commute. Two of them being Swedish and Norwegian, were looking for a Volvo !!! I stepped in and suggested that since they are in the US, get an American car, leave the Volvo for when you go back. So we found a 63 Sedan de Ville at a dealer for $600. Looked almost like the one in your picture, (the one in the pic is a 64). Even though in the beginning they were a bit intimidated with the size, it ended up such a hit, they loved it, at the 25 year reunion, everyone kept talking about "the car" . No problem fitting 6 to go to school, no problem fitting 10 or more when going or coming back from parties. Car started out as white, but little by little they started spray painting it, and it ended up like it just came back from Woodstock. Throughout its college years, the Caddy drank a lot of oil and produced a lot of smoke, but never broke down, took the guys back and forth every day. After they left, I took over the car, spray painted it all black over all the peace and love signs, kept it for another year before selling it to a guy who restored it.

Got about 500 miles per quart. Always had a case of Sapphire 10-40 in the hatch.

 

In 1973 when I turned 18, I spent my hard earned cash on a 1970 Triumph GT6+

Only had 14000 miles on her.

Literally, fell apart in front of my eyes. Sold her after 1 year and 3K miles for what I initially paid.

 

A 1989 Ford Taurus and lasted me a year.Had the transmission rebuilt once.Had to get rid of it,had the 3.8 which was known for head gasket issues.Head gaskets blew when I was about to leave for work one day.It was replaced with a 1991 Buick Lesabre which was a great car to me,had this car for 3 years getting me to point A to point B.

 

My first car was my Grandfathers Ford Escort 98' model, 1.6 Ghia. burgundy in colour with a fuzzy material interior. 60k on the clock i believe. She was quite a good runner till i had to sell her. Insurance was too high for me at the age of 18. So i ended up with a Peugeot 206 1.1 Look. Horrendous car :/

 

My first car was a 1971 Toyota Celica. Right after getting it painted I was rear ended so I bought a 1972 shell and swapped all the parts. She was a beauty sporting a 2.2L 18-RG with NOS. She ran a 13.6 quarter. I sold her February 1987 and have regretted it for years.











Time capsule. Fast forward 30 years. I get a strange email that said, "Celica, you interested?"

Long story short, after 6 owners after me and 30 years of time I found her and she is safely back home. She is rough, neglected and the years have not been friendly but she is now my project and will roam the streets again.

 

1. 1968 BMW 2002. Somebody swapped in a 1600 cc engine, I returned the favor and dropped in a 2000 cc.
2. 1973 Mercury Capri. rolled up to 200K miles. Good think it wasn't an interference engine - snapped in a timing belt curbside in Queens NY.
3. 1973 BMW 2002. Lowering springs, fat sway bars , Alpina air dam, 292 cam and Solex side drafts off a 2000 Ti. Just resold the carbs last year after finding in my basement. Sold when I moved to Manhattan - too expensive to park.
4. 1973 BMW 2002 #2. ran like crap when I bought it, but only needed points. blew a head gasket so I did the rings at the same time, got to use a ridge reamer... had to sell when I moved to SF as I pulled all the emissions and added a weber carb and header.
5. 1984 Audi 4000 Quattro. Best car ever! put 250K miles on it, owned for 20+ years, sold it when the wife wanted a new car...
6. 1995 Volvo 850T Wagon. Wife wanted a safe car for kids - I got to choose the options... Just turned 200K, a very smart car - it went through college and 3 years of medical school so far.
7. 2000 Volvo S40. Inheritance - Mom wanted to replace her 240 so this was it. When she couldn't drive anymore it became my daily and the 850 went to my daughter. Now my son's college car... just turned 100K.
8. 2004 Toyota Highlander - Wife's ride. 165K miles and maybe 2 unscheduled repairs. Amazing reliability.
9. 2012 VW CC. My current daily. An Audi without the badge or the AWD IMHO. Got a new engine at 49K miles under warranty when the oil pump failed, so its young at heart. DSG is a great transmission - but it requires a $400 oil change for the gearbox every 40K miles....

I'm only 18 ... so there's that.

The first car I ever drove was a 1998 Ford Explorer with the OHV V6 and automatic transmission, which I believe is a very good first car for a new driver. It was passed down to me and I drove it 3 years before it got passed down to my younger sister. I drove a 4 cylinder automatic 2006 Honda Accord a few times, and boy was it different. That thing was so touchy I just couldn't drive it smoothly.

The first car I ever bought is my 2000 S70. I had been saving up for it since the 10th grade, and bought it in the 12th grade. I did borrow some money from my grandparents to help pay for it, and its not titled in my name, but it I am the only one that drives it.

I think I'll be a Volvo driver for life. I want to get a manual C70 or S40 at some point.
