Default Whining noise - new timing belt bearings had no effect

Car: 2008 Volvo C70 Automatic Transmission with 72K miles.

So a few days ago, I noticed a whining noise coming from the front of the engine. In an effort to divide and conquer, I removed the AC and Alternator belts. The noise persisted. I then concluded that the noise was coming from a timing belt bearing. Hence I replaced the water pump, timing belt, tensionner and idler pulley. (This was more difficult that I anticipated as there is not much room to work with.) At any rate, after I reassembled it, the noise did not go away.

It is hard to pinpoint the source of the noise, but it appears to be coming from the cams area. It does not do it when cold.

Attached is an MP3 of the noise. Note that there are really two different whining sounds superimposed on top of each other.

At this point, I'm thinking it is either coming from the turbo, but I am hoping it is simpler than that. (I've read that a faulty PCV may also make noise).

At any rate, I'm hoping someone here can identify the noise and point me in the right direction.

Thanx in advance.

Remove the plastic cover off the top of the timing belt. See if the sound is coming from one of the vvt solenoids. Also how is the belt running on the cam gears? is the belt running centered or more to one side?

Hi,

I finally got around to unplugging the VVT solenoids. No joy. Noise is still present. As for the belt, yes, it is running center.

Any other ideas?

I found the problem. It turned out the "Oil Filter Separator Box Diaphragm". Changing it was easy peasy, lemon squeezy. Part only cost about $20.00 at ipdusa.
