Default Wheel bearings bad?

I have a 2003 S-60 with45,283miles. I recently installed new tires about 2,000 miles ago. I began to hear a grinding noise in my front passenger side wheel. I took it to the dealer in Kansas City and they told me I need a new wheel bearing. The estimated cost was $2,800. This seems like a lot of money for a wheel bearing. Is this a reasonable amount? What makes it so expensive? Is this a common problem on S-60's? Thank you for your help.

I got the rear driver's side wheel bearing replaced on my S80 for about $600. I live in Florida btw.

Did you have your bearings replaced at a Volvo dealership?

Yeah and it might have been cheaper than $600. I had a lot of owrk done that week. A cam shaft reset valve, wheel bearing, brake booster, maf and etm, new airbox, and the 120k service. Altogether it was around $3,200 with a "friend" discount.

Same happened to me LucyDog. I installed four new tires on my 98 S70 and 2,000 miles into them I started to hear the grinding noise. Front passenger-side wheel bearing. It cost me $240. I live in Burbank, CA. And I thought this was pricey!
