Default ’92 945 Turbo: No blower at any speed, belt confusion.

I recently bought my 940 Turbo Estate and since purchase the blower motor has never functioned, on any speed or any temperature. Upon checking under the hood I notice that there is no belt on what I believe to be the AC conpressor, and it appears there are spaces for two. It seems redundant to have two belts on it, both connecting to the crank and one to the alternator as well, but I’m not sure the correct belt configuration. I’m not even sure if this has anything to do with the non functioning blower. I figure my first step would be to check fuses, then try and sort the belt conundrum before replacing the blower motor itself.
Many advice with the belts, fuses, or anything else that might be the culprit is greatly appreciated, thank you!

correct fanbelt configuration on a 1992 turbo...



odds are, that compressor is dead. the blower should ALSO come on when the engine gets hot, like in stop and go traffic on a hot day.


just btw/fyi... the extra pulley slot on the compressor was used on some 240's where the power steering pump was where your alternator is, and a separate belt ran between the a/c compressor and the PS pump. on these cars, the alternator was where your PS pump is, on the other side of the engine.

wait, are you sure that's a 92 ? up through 91, they had a mechanical fan, 1992+ turbos had no mechanical fan, and instead had a bigger radiator and more powerful 2-speed electric fan.

this is a 1991 turbo

Thank you for pointing that out, I didn’t notice my typo, it is indeed a ‘91. Quite the keen eye.
So if I’m understanding correctly, you’re saying that the mechanical fan in a ‘91 is tied to the conpressor and thus refitting a belt would be a step towards finding the culprit, beit the belt or something further down the line?

the mechanical fan is on the water pump, and should be turning if the engine is on...... its the electric fan on the 92+ that had two speeds, and would be on low if the a/c is running, and run on high when the engine got hot. on the 91, I think the electric fan came on with the a/c only ? not 100% sure.

Ahh, I see. So the blower should come on despite the lack of belt on the ac conpressor, so my problem must lie somewhere else, most likely the blower motor then.

the electric blower likely only comes on when the a/c control unit tells it to. my guess is, your whole AC systems is messed up, so it probably never tells it to come on.

typically, the control signal comes out of the dashboard AC control panel, goes through a low pressure and high pressure switch, if the pressure is too low or two high, then it won't ever even try to come on, then it goes to the compressor clutch, and to the fan control relay.

i'm better, the belt was taken off because the compressor is dead, and there is no refrigerant left in the system.

Are you talking about the HVAC blower or the auxiliary radiator fan motor?

pretty sure he is talking about the electric fan on the radiator not the hvac fan.. what we like to call the 'blower'. i know
on my 91 that fan has never come on.. no matter how hot the ambient temp is.. and my a/c is completely MIA..
it is just decoration.

right. I would try the switch first, double check fuses. if you dig into it enough to replace the blower make sure you get the resistor too. not worth it to h ave to open it again a month later for 80$.

what someone else asked, are you talking about the blower under the dashboard for the heater/ventilation system, or are you talking about the electric fan on the radiator ?

Thanks for the tip on the resistor santafealltheway. I recently replaced the blower fan motor (91 940SE 230ft) to get a little bit of defrosting air moving inside. But am unable to get full speed or volume of blow either onto windshield or down onto feet.
I am thinking that the resistor is my next step.

I believe the 940SE has the ECC climate control and stuff from the 960, this is a much more complicated system than the regular 940... in particular, the fan speed has an electronic control module 2/10 rather than the simple series resistance used on the regular 940's. An ECC system has an 'auto' position on the fan switch, and has a temperature **** calibrated i n degrees instead of just relatively hot/cold.

are you getting air in the right places at the right time, just not enough of it ? if the various flaps aren't cycling correctly, its possible you need the vacuum solenoid block, o rthe vacuum itself is simply disconnected or a one-way vacuum valve has failed.

the 940SE ECC fan is horizontal, while the 940 fan is vertical. if this is indeed a 940SE with the ECC system, that fan control module is part 1365678, and is unobtanium. you'd have to find one on a 960 up to 1994 (1995+ 960's with the face lift are a completely revised car)

Good to know about the unobtanium on the control module. I will have to reverify that flaps are cycling correctly. Maybe it was just wishful thinking that they were. Thanks all and have a great Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend!
