14mm or 16mm Tie Rods? 1994 Volvo 940 T
This is not an entirely new subject here. My understanding from what I have read to date is that the boot covering the inner tie rod can sometimes be inscribed with a code representing the size of the tie rod thread. This however cannot be relied upon.
It has also been said that this information is contained on the VIN plate. On the second row down at the right side of my plate is the code 16(240 2). Nowhere else do the numbers 1 and 6 (16) or 1 and 4 (14) appear together.
Can I take it that my tie rods are most likely 16mm or should I measure them to be sure? I am erring away from this as I don't know if they are exposed and.. ahem I am not yet sure how to measure a thread (caliper gauge across the breadth of it?)
Thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks Typhoon. I think I have been labouring under a misapprehension having got the wrong end of the stick from a q & a here (ntm a jumpy mechanic here).
The thread size was treated as such a mystery I thought they must be referring to the inaccessible thread connecting the tie rod to the steering rack. Are you saying it is the thread where the inner tie rod connects to the outer one?
