1979 244dl
Hey guys.
So the end of summer is drawing near and I'm starting to wonder where I will put my newly acquired motorcycle when the rain starts here in vancouver. The problem is, I've got a 1979 244dl sitting in the garage taking up all the space. It has been sitting there for at least 10 years now. I have tried to get it running to use it in the past with no luck. Now this is my new motivation to do it.
Last time I tried, the starter would turn, engine would even slightly cough a bit. Fuel was getting to carb. but spark was weak. Was using a battery from a running car to test. I did the resistance tests on the ignition coil, that looked fine. I cleaned the corrosion off most connections. I was never sure whether or not I was testing for spark correctly, but whether i be holding the spark plug or ignition wire to engine block. the most i ever got was a tiny orange spark.
When i measured voltage to ignition coil during crank, i was only getting about 10V. Is that my problem?
Now that I think about it, it was probably a bad move, but i took the carb out and apart in order to clean it. It is pretty gunked up but looks like gas could still make it through.
What do you guys recommend i use to clean it and do you have any suggestions as to where I could get a new gasket kit? They don't look that hot but I'm thinking of reusing them.. considering i'm not sure this would help me. The only gasket that looks terrible is the carb to intake manifold, which feels like paper now..
Any tips would be great. I really would like to get his baby on the road and use it this fall/winter.
thank you!
