1984 240 Cranks, won't start
Hello,
I would first off like to say thanks to all the people on this board who help others. I've read many posts in hope of getting an answer to my problem and there are a lot of very knowledgeable folks here.
I recently bought my first Volvo for 250 bucks from a buddy of mine. The car is in amazing shape. He said it probably needed a fuel pump because it wouldn't start.
Well, so far I have replaced both relays, fuel filter, under frame pump, ignition wires. I tested the in tank pump and it seems fine to me.
I read on here that many people have replaced the ECU, so I ordered a used on off Ebay. When I received it and installed, I noticed it was the 510, the correct one for an 84. The one that was in it was a 510, which if I understand, was the next generation 240's.
My buddy said that only a few months ago the car drove fine. Now, if I am lucky, I can get it to start sometimes after cranking for a long time.
I would sure appreciate any ideas anyone may have. Got a great deal on the car ( I think) and would love to get it on the road.
Thanks in advance for any help and have a great weekend.

Thank you for the reply.
With either ECU, it just cranks and acts like it wants to start.
With the original ECU (544)on the occasion is does start, will idle but dies as soon as you try to give it gas. Then usually just back to cranking.
The used ECU I purchased (510) it's even harder to get started. If you give it gas while it's cranking it will foul the plugs. When it does start, seems to run ok. I've been able to drive it around my cul de sac. But again, once turned off hard to ever get started again.
I've looked around these forums pretty good and cannot seem to find the answer to this problem.
Thanks again.
