Default 1986 240 DL Wagon - Fuel Pumps/Sending Unit

So, i'm having the classic issues with my fuel pumps so i'm going to go ahead and replace them, but i'm curious to know if I should also replace the fuel sending unit while i'm in there. I'm not having any issues with the gas tank gauge on the instrument panel and other than that I'm not sure if there are any other indications of it's condition without looking at it.

Basically I need to order all the parts and I'm trying to save the money by not replacing the most expensive one but I'm willing to do it if it's recommended (or if it's shot when we pull it out of the top of the tank).

Any advice would be helpful at this point. Thanks!

Mabel

"Classic issues"? Do tell!
I don't replace things in these cars that are not malfunctioning... Just because some mechanic wants to make money, it's a sure way to screw up the car. If it ain't broke, you know...

Yes, "classic issues" - as in the same problems i've been having with my fuel pump(s) are talked about on a dozen other websites/forums. Also, on the "top 10 issues with the 240" on the IPD blog.

Thank you for the input tho. Mechanic is an acquaintance and doesn't charge me much for labor so that's not really a factor (I might pay $75 to install all three parts). I just wanted to know if it was worth changing the sending unit out while we were in there. I've owned this Volvo for about 6 months and have had to make a list of repairs so far. It was sitting for a long time so lots of things are shaking lose now that i'm driving it daily.

Aside from the gas tank gauge on the instrument panel not showing accurate fuel levels (an issue i'm not having) what are the other indicators that the sending unit is bad?

For what it's worth. I have the same question.

I would only replace the sending unit if it is so rusty that the plastic part on top that seals where the wires go through is about to fall off. The aftermarket sending units have issues being mis-wired and faulty floats. If you do replace it with the aftermarket. compare the wiring harness of the replacement with your original and correct as necessary. Also, pull the float bulb off of your original as the aftermarket float bulbs tend to leak and fill up with gas. The original one should fit just fine.

This is all discussed on this site:

Good information, Act! I'm waiting for the pumps to arrive and hopefully we'll be able to get in there in the next few days to see what the sending unit looks like. I appreciate the response! Hopefully, i'll be good for a while after this repair. I hope I didn't just jinx myself.
