Default 1986 Volvo 240DL Oil Filter Size HELP!!!

Hey, I just bought my first 240 for $200 last week it's been sitting a while and I'm trying to change the oil but I can't find the right filter. AutoZone gave me an STP S16 filter and it's way bigger than the one currently on the engine. I bought the wrong size oil filter socket twice and can't get it off so I can just take it in and find the right size. Anyone happen to know what size this thing is (STP, Fram, or Bosch)?

Also, it starts and idles fine but it cuts off when I put it in gear, so any hints there would be great. I pulled the throttle body and MAF sensor off and cleaned them but haven't had a chance to get them back on and fire it back up. I also siphoned all the old gas out of the tank (or as much as i could) and put some new fuel in along with some seafoam. From what I can tell both fuel pumps cut on (although it sounds like the main pump runs continuously even when I don't have the key in the on position, which doesn't seem right)

Nobody on this board would recommend using an after market oil filter - particularly from Fram or STP on a Volvo (they can have too much resistance and cause low oil pressure). Go to your local foreign car parts shop or use mail order and purchase Mann filters - pretty sure your model uses the W917 size. best to double check. Note that S16 cross references to a Mann W920 so yes, its the wrong size.

Mann made the original Volvo filters, Mahle are also good. I will admit, I have used Wix filters from local (non-chain) auto parts stores when I haven't had a Mann on hand, it seemed as well made as the Mann... One size fits all 240/740/940's...

My Mercedes also use Mann or Mahle. Now, my Ford diesel truck, that get a Motorcraft filter, which is effin huge.

and if its too tight to take off by hand, use the sort of strap wrench you can use with a 3/8 extension and short ratchet. ONLY install oil filters by hand, clean the mating surface on the engine, rub a finger dab of clean oil around the rubber gasket, thread on til you feel it engaging and another 1/2 to 3/4 turn.

Back in the day, we used the ST-16 filter that you could get from Wal Mart. Yes, it is a bit taller than the OEM but it fits right on. The filter works fine for this application.

You can still get this filter in some locations, but with those cars a minimum of 25+ years out of production, a bit less for the 740 and 940, it varies.

with the correct filter costing $6, whats the point in using the wrong thing?

I already bought the right STL filter, but I have to change the motor mounts and the filters gonna have to come off anyway, so I'll go ahead and order a Mann filter. It's not like it's going anywhere anytime soon anyway

So Maddenkm, you mentioned replacing the motor mounts. A common condition with these redblocks is as the passenger side motor mount becomes more deteriorated, the motor can actually sag and the oil filter takes the weight of the motor . It is usually discovered when attempting an oil change and the mechanic cannot remove the filter. To prevent this, wipe off any oil spill onto the mount, and check for leaks from the filter after you change it.

Thanks- I finally got her running after replacing basically the whole fuel system, and then figuring out that the ground from the fuel pump relay to the ECU was bad. But she's purring like a kitten now - after new plugs, wires, distributor cap, ball joints, battery, IAC valve, MAF sensor, fuel pump, fuel filter, and motor mounts. Now I just have to flush the trans fluid (and probably the coolant, brake fluid, and power steering as well) and make her look pretty, and hopefully she'll continue to run for a loooong time. The odometer is broken (of course) but I estimate from previous paperwork that it only has about 120,000-130,000 miles.

usually the odometers fail because of the little plastic gears - there are repair kits ~$30 on eBay. I've done this repair on an 850...

The ST-16 filter is not the "wrong" filter. It fits just fine and shows up in certain applications as the filter. These cars are now a minimum of 26+ years old. I can't believe that there is such a fuss over an oil filter.

No, I wouldn't spend $6 for a filter that I can buy that does a great job for $3. We can have this debate until time itself comes to an end but over the years we installed hundreds of ST-16 filters on Volvo cars with absolutely no issues.

The best filter is the one that you change with the oil.

I run ford FL-1A I know its not the proper filter but works just fine plus I have a bunch of them Ive had from previous car. The express lube places will put on any filter that will screw on. So I change my own oil now.

Well, true about the filters not being that crucial, I mean really, what's the last time a B230 had an oil related failure? That Red Block is the last thing to go on a Volvo... I like to use the Mann filter, and when I see a car with a Mann I feel the maintenance has been done by somebody who gave a damn but other than that, meh... I think Volvo owners, the "enthusiasts" at least, worry too much about oil and such. Better make sure the trans fluid is changed now and then along with the P/ steering, brake, etc. And lube those door hinges so the doors don't sound like they are from a dungeon...
