Question 1987 740gle running problems

Hi

As stated I have an old girl, a 2.3 petrol auto. Has been experiencing an intermittent fault for the past couple of years - driving along like a dream when the engine seems to cut out (the first time it happened instinct had me press the throttle, which brought her back) As this happens the rev counter goes haywire...

Now having further problems - they could be linked to the above issue or not...added just in case it rings a bell.

Current problem: she's missing a little but runs reasonably in neutral...put her into drive & she struggles... almost as if a fuel filter problem, dropping & surging (but has had new filter) & kangarooing like a mad thing. New plugs & HT leads yesterday, plus cleaning the rotor arm, made no difference.

Can anyone advise please - my friendly mech is scratching his head on this one

I'd examine the Hall Sensor and associated wiring. It's in the distributor and on an '87 prone to wiring disintegration. I'd also look at the MAF sensor.

Most of my rough running issues were vacuum related. Hole in the intake tube between the MAF and throttle body (you may have to take the tube off to see the hole). About every 5,000 miles I had to clean the throttle body. You also want to make sure the flame trap is clean or replaced.
