1987 740GLE wagon tranny question.
The tranny on my 1987 740GLE wagon just blew. I don't really want to risk rebuilding it. I am looking for a used replacement right now. The car has a four speed with push button overdrive. Is this the M46 or M47? Will a transmission from a similar year 740 turbo work? Do the b230f and b230ft engines share the same tranny? Thanks everyone, I'm just trying to broaden my search for a replacement.
It's definitely an M46 + OD. The M47 is the five speed. I've owned both and I prefer the latter, although there is absolutely nothing wrong with the OD version. You might not have a choice about which you put in. Either the M47 will not fit, or you might find an M46+OD before you find an M47. Myself, I'd just find an M46 and swap your good OD onto it.
Consider this. Moving to the M47 will entail replacing the propeller shaft and then you're gonna get into whether the support bearing/bushing is gonna work on your body frame. It could get ugly pretty quickly. I'm no Volvo mechanic, but I see problems there. I'd stick with the M46+OD. There's nothing wrong with that combo that I've ever experienced.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the help on this. I just picked up a used tranny from an '88 740 turbo wagon. I'm hoping it will fit in my '87 740GLE wagon. I'm thinking this has to be an M46, so there should be no problem with the change. I'm wondering... was an '88 740 available with an M47? I will have to install the one I have and I hope I don't run into problems. Thanks for the insight.
PS, the problem I was having with erratic acceleration on my previous post ended up being the wiring harness. [&o]

Hey,
I was getting ready to install the trans from the '88 740 Turbo into my '87 740GLE, when I noticed a couple differences. Did the '88 have a hydraulic clutch? Will I need to use the bell housing from my old trans, because the pivot point for the clutch seems to be on the opposite side on the new one? Will everything work from the bell housing back, or are there small differences that might make this trans unusable? Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your help.
