1988 740 turbo stall hard restart cold at idle and driving

340K here and live in the northeast . No rust and other then replacing the exhaust system twice and doing normal maintenance we have had no problems.

340k w/ with original power stage, MAF, crank sensor, fuel pump relay, water pump gaskets, that water valve at the back of the engine, fuse box blow motor fuse holder burning up, pcv oil trap, intake manifold gasket, voltage regulator. All equal problems.
Yet to see one volvo that didn't need anything other then fluid changes and filters.

had 7 volvos, although only 3 were red blocks, 1 did need a MAF for an 850 turbo that my son is now driving, at about 180k miles. never had to replace a power stage, crank sensor. daughter's car (the 400k 87 240) needed a fuel pump relay, oops, no, it was the fuel pump itself, at about 350k miles. my turbo needed the intank pump at about 240k miles, probably got some crappy gas. yes, I've replaced a couple heater valves. water pumps are a ~ 200k mile wear item on most any car I've ever owned. PCV oil traps are a service item, if you don't clean them out periodically, they gum up. alternator brushes are a ~ 250k mile wear item, bundled with the regulator on these bosch alternators. I don't think I've driven any other brand cars that didn't need a new alternator around 250k miles. some sooner.
I can add the radiator on my turbo 740, it was bad at 200k miles. also on the 240, at about 350k it was corroded inside. hoses? sure, standard wear item, typically rarely go past 250k miles on any car i've owned.
you want a maintenance pit? try a early 1990s Mercedes. they consider the engine wiring harness ($800 wholesale, $1200 retail plus 4-5 hours) a wear item. they have enough power steering hoses to plumb a nuclear submarine. rubber flex-discs in the driveshaft that need replacing every 120k or so miles, step 1? drop the entire exhaust system including downpipe and dual(!) cats.
I won't get into my wife's 2004 Toyota Camry... we haven't put more than maintenanceinto it yet but its smoking like a reggae concert at 160k miles, and its had full synth oil changes every 7.5k since new. oh, it just needs valve sleeves? yeah, well the VVTi system makes that a majorly ugly job. the suspension, kind of mushy when new, was totally vague and bouncy at 100k miles, and the steering rack is totally worn out, clunking back and forth. basically, at 10 years and 160k miles, its scrap.
