Hey guys I need some help! I drove my 1988 240 for about 20 minuets then at a stop light I noticed it had a couple misfires or maybe a quick rough idle.. I got home and turned it off.. then turned it on again to see if it would do it again but this time it started with a service light on the dashboard.. I own 2 240's (the other being a 89 LH2.4) and this one feels slower than my other one. The fuel pump/filter was just replaced and timing is perfect.. Any ideas before I start buying and replacing everything?? Cheers

 

when was the last time you did plugs/wires/rotor/cap? inspect the cap for any corrosion and make sure its not cracked. have you sprayed around for intake air leaks (particularly the injector seals and vacuum lines)?

 

the *SERVICE* light is just a 5000 or 7000 mile mechanical timer on the odometer, telling you its time to change the oil.

the *CHECK ENGINE LIGHT* is attached to the engine diagnostics, but I don't think a 88 LH2.2 car has one.

 

Curious on the reset for the service light. On my old 84 Audi, there was a button on the reduction gear box where the cable from the tranny fed into the cable to the dash. On my 850, resets were done by the jumper box. Finally my S40 resets via the trip odometer button (my son was amazed when I showed him that..).

 

on my 920 740 and 93 960, there was a little plastic plug in the window in front of the speedometer at the bottom, you pulled out that plug, and inserted a thin tool like a long #2 phillips, and pushed fairly hard.

I don't remember our 87 240 having a service light.

 

If it is the service light (not check engine), it needs to be reset from the back of the instrument cluster. I'm not familiar with the '88 but our '89 was that way. There is a little lever that needs to be pressed to reset it. In '90, they put a little button in the bottom right corner of the instrument cluster.

 

neither my '87 244 nor my '88 244 have the "service light".

edit: the ‘88 does have the service light, but it either is burned out, removed, or non-functional.
