1989 240 wagon won't restart after short trips
For past couple of months my volvo will refuse to start, then flood causing me embarrasment and about a 10 - 15 minute wait before it starts first go. This has been happening if I drive around 2ks or less ie: go from work to service station, or school to pre-school etc. Anything over 5ks seemed to be fine and car would always start. As of yesterday, it has decided to not re-start after even after a 25km trip.
If it won't start the first time, it's not going to start until I wait some time which is very inconvenient and embarrasing. I have taken it to the Volvo mechanic (specializes in Volvo only) switched it off and of course it started straight away. Even aftera short trip around the block it re-started fine (it's possessed I think). Anyway, the mechanic said it will be extremely hard to work out unless it is faulting for him to see. I am ready to have it run over by a giant haul truck from the local gold mine - any suggestions??

intermittent problems can be the hardest to fix but when this happened on my 240 it was the electrical part of the ignition switch. You can test for this yourself the next time it happens to you. With the key on you should have 12v on the one side of the coil (I think on mine the wire is black with a red stripe) If you have no voltage then I would suspect the ign switch. It might also be that the coolant temp sensor to the ecu (not the one to the gage) might be bad or have a poor connection. If there is more resistance (corrosion on electrical connection) it leads the ecu to beleive that it is colder than it really is and you get a longer injector pulse that would lead to flooding (i only mention this because you mentioned flooding)
Hey, Im new, but I post elsewhere, so I'll just use this feed! My 89 244 wagon is very ill, and I need some help withthe wiring in the fusebox. We recently were given the car, and it's a son of basket case! I can't afford a manual for a few days, so a wiring diagram is not available. All circuits are powered, but, when we got the car, there was no fuel pump hum. The car stopped running. I did some tshoots, and now the pumps hum. Are they supposed to run constant, intermittently( to pressurise only)? Oh, the pcv valve looks like a corn cob pipe!Just some advice to lead me into the zone! Thanks
We have an 89 240 in great condition just bought it for our daughter. We have owned several volvos over the years including a 245L that did 1 million ks and is still going. We are having some problems restarting the 240 after short trips like down the shop before it gets to full operating temp. If we leave it for 30mins it will start straight away. It turns over willingly but feels like there is no fuel getting through, it tries very hard to start but just cant get there. On long trips there has been no problems. Any ideas
I cleaned up all the fuses
I wriggle the gear selector in park or put in Neutral
I charged the battery it's ok
New plugs
air cleaner
it seems to have spark but no fuel.
Any help much apreciated dont like the idea of our daughter stuck somewhere.

To all fuel problems. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?
What is the fuel pressure? Fuel pumps usually run if demand is present.
Tried any fuel system cleaner? What do all spark plugs look like? Spark plug wires/boots if applicable?

Fuel filter looked new but I will repace it. Plugs were good but gap was to close. It runs great when going and after it gets to full opeating temp restarts no problems. Is there any sort of choke mechanism i can disconect or bypass. Its a B230F . Any ideas why only when not fully warmed up. Starts ok from cold and from hot. I hate mystery problems
