1990 240 dl
runs fine until shut off.
after restart it has rough loping idle and smells of gas
After 20-30 seconds idle levels out and engine runs fine
Full tuneup & replaced prepump in tank
Self diagnostic code 2-3-2 & 1-3-1
???
Has anybody had this issue

I am learning about 240''s, thanks for pushing me in the right direction.
Last mechanic charges $525 to diagnosis and replace air mass meter. Problem did not go away so he put my old one back on. Now he is cleaning throttle body and we will see.
This site is awesome.

My son's 240 runs beautiful until after it shut off for 15-20 minutes. When restarting it has looping/like it wants to die with smell of gas for 20-30 seconds. After putting in neutral or just letting it get its breath it runs great. If it is restarted right away it is fine, problem is only when it sits for 15-20 minutes.

could be a failing engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT), this is a seperate sensor from the one that is connected to the dashboard gauge. the ECT tells the ICU and ECU if the engine is warm, so it knows the optimal amount of fuel.
there's a procedure you can test them with a ohm meter while they are still in the car, by unplugging the ECU (just forward of the lower right-side front door hinge) and probing the ECU plug with said ohm meter.... do this when the car is fully hot, get the reading, wait for the car to cool down, and read again.
see Engine Sensors your 1990 240 has LH2.4, same as a Volvo 740/940 1989+ ...

Last conversation with mechanic was he wanted to change thermostat. He said gauge was below where it should be. You might have a point, will check.
Thanks,
Thanks,
I have problem solved backward I think from pre pump to main pump, AMM, throttle body, and fuel pressure regulator.
Your comment on coolent temperature sensor is interesting. I am waiting for a friend with a ohm meter:-) to check it out.
I got to drive it all day today and if you wait for 45-60 seconds after starting warm (seems like forever) it will level out idle and you will be good to go.
What about injectors? Do you think one might be leaking? After warm start you can feel rough idle and if you wait it out you can hear distinctive leveling of idle and then it to runs very smooth.
I am starting to like this car and want to get it ready for a road trip down to San Diego with my son.
