1990 240DL won't start

Check the coolant level, check the oil level and color, look for signs of milky residue in the oil. If all is well, run the engine monitoring the gauge for 15-20 minutes. No overheating? No lights on? You should be OK.
But, your thermostat may have failed causing the overheating in the first place. A "broken" t-stat would not make the motor run cold, but hot. You may want to change it, it's a cheap part. You can test it, immerse it in hot water, watch it open, etc. Fun!
