Default 1990 model 240 DL missing gear shift label

Hi guys,
I just got an automatic Volvo 240 DL from my cousin - before that it was my dad's, and originally my grandma's car, so I'm super happy to be keeping it in the family. This is my first car.....anyway it's missing a few parts, so I want to get it back in good condition.
One thing I've been looking for online and I can't find anywhere - it's the label for the gears that's next to the shifter. It's the plastic part that says D, R, P, and all that stuff. I was wondering if anyone knew exactly what it was called, or anywhere I could find one?

Thanks!!

Gear shift/shifter housing

I don't think you can get just the strip. Look for a salvage yard for the part.

You missing the whole cover, or just the labels? I'm pretty sure you're missing the whole thing part no 1224186. What color do you need?

just the part that says the gear names on it. I still have the cover and everything...I guess I could just buy the whole cover if that's my only option. I found it on this website (Cover for Volvo (1224186)) for about $135 with shipping. My 240 is Sand colored, so it's a beige/brown themed inside.
thanks for telling me the part number! I might buy it soon.

my daughter's 240 has a beige/tan interior, I replaced her broken gear shifter bezel with a black one, and frankly, it looks just fine there. I think a black bezel would go with ANY color interior.

the easy way to replace it is it cut a thin slit on the new one right in the middle between the two screws on the front side (closest to the dashboard)... I used a fine tooth hacksaw blade. then it will go around the shaft of the shifter lever, and the two screws will hold it together nicely, you'll never even notice its slit.

p.s. geez, $135 for new? highway robbery. I got a used one off someone on a forum or mail list for like $20 including shipping.

that sounds pretty simple to put on, i think i could do it! do you have any ideas as to where i could find one for less than $135? I've been looking around online all morning and I can't find anything.

I think I got the one I picked up from someone on the Swedish Bricks email list. otherwise, start trolling pik-n-pulls for 240's. AFAIK, that trim piece is the same on ANY 240 automatic, although the trim comes in black, tan, brown, blue, red. black goes with everything bring a small thin saw blade to the pik n pull so you can slice between the screw holes to remove the part without having to disassemble the whole shifter assembly to get the **** off.

hey, does the light that is under there to the left of the shifter lever work? that light is an SOB to replace, and without it, you won't see what gear you're in anyways.

just signed up for the swedish bricks list! i'll start looking around the pik n pulls soon. the car is still in the shop for its 120,000 mile service, so we shall start adventuring soon

i'm not sure if the light works, but i remember while i was driving it to the shop I'm pretty sure I didn't see a light in the empty space there.....so maybe i should just buy the whole unit anyway haha

I'm pretty sure you only see the tranny indicator light when the dashboard lights are on, its on the dashboard dimmer.

anyways, the bezel doesn't include this light. replacing it is a SOB, you ahve tot ake the whole transmission linkage apart from the bottom and its inside a piece thats just inaccessible

this is the one for a 740/940, its very similar.

Auto Disassembly Volvo Inc. - Volvo Parts - Used and New Honest & reliable Volvo parts.
E-mail these guys about the part. They can do shipping to other states. I have seen lots of 240s in their yard. You will probably get the part for about $20, maybe less.

ok, the 240 shifter isn't NEARLY as complicated as that 740/940.

the light is in piece #14. its only lit when your dashboard lights are on, and it backlights the gear you're currently in so you can tell in the dark.

HA....Pierce I saw your post about the light being hard to replace. I am one who has to read instructions 5 times...and then...im still full of anxiety when I tear into the job. When I was reading your post, I was thinking...OMG..I screwed it up because I just took the shifter apart and saw a non-operative bulb just hanging there.

I emailed them! thanks 740Turbo.
I'm probably gonna get the car from the shop today or tomorrow, and I'll check to see if the light works then Pierce...hopefully it does!! I don't really want to deal with it...haha
Wicks, I totally feel the same as you, except I have zero experience with this stuff! I just want to return my Volvo to its rightful state and fix everything I can.
I'll keep you guys updated! Thanks again for all your help!

btw, i'm wrong about the year of the car in the title of this thread - it's 1987, not 1990
