Default 240 GL '88 - 4th gear missing

hello

my name is oscar and , on a roadtrip in western australia .
got this great volvo at perth , had a 740 back in switzerland
for years without any problems , so i was pretty happy to find
this one . had a leaking oilcap , stop at a volvo garage ,
they gave me one for free ! - but just there it won't start again , no
sound at all , asked a mechanik there , his adwise : take out this bloody
immobiliser ! i did and it started . sometimes the 4th gear took some
time to come in (automatic) , but always came . 3 month later , again
the car won't start , no sounds at all , so what if the immobiliser wasn't
the problem ? then the only thing a did , was disconnecting the power
when i took it out - so i disconnected the batterie , on again and it
started . now the 4th gear doesn'tcomes in at all , the "batterie trick"
does help to solve this problem too. but it is hassle . my questions :

- where do i find this relay , not working properly ? - to check connections
and woud you use WD40 to get the relay going ?
- got someone an electric plan ,to probalbly shortcut the 4th gear switch .
- is this gear problem hooked with the not starting problem , same relay ?

thank you

Most likely the problem with your 4th gear is a failing overdrive relay. To find this relay, remove the glove box. This relay is located just the the left of the glove box. You can re-solder the solder joints on the little circuit board in the relay and it should work again. If you would rather permanently enable 4th gear, you can try the trick with the dremel tool as described in this thread:

https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...rplexed-73035/

As far as the no-start condition, that could be due to any number of issues unrelated to you 4th gear issue. One thing to check is the fuel pump relay. This relay is located just behind the glove compartment. When it doesn't want to start, try tapping this relay and see if it clicks on.

thanks for the info

will check the conntacts and the relay .

an other quetion , tried to search in the forum but my laptop
keeps on crashing on this site , found a reserve bottle dextron 3
for the transmission , volvo says dextron 2 d . woud you change it ?
cause the 4th needed some time to come in , not as much in hotter
regions , and when it didn't came in at all ,it was quiet cool ?

when it didn't want to start , no cranking just nothing - like
a dead batterie but the batterie is ok , guess must be a relay
to , cause off and on the batterie solved the problem .

cheers

merc/dex III is the correct ATF to use in these transmissions. My preferred version is the Castrol Multi-Import, which mentions older Toyotas....

Fun fact, the AW70 transmissions in these Volvos are made by Aisin-Warner of Japan, which is Toyota's transmission factory, in fact this transmission is the same as 1980s Supra Turbos, Cressidas, etc, as well as many toyota 2x4 pickup trucks.

btw, leaking oilcap, if oil is blowing out the oilcap, the PCV system, known as a 'flame trap' on these volvos, is probably plugged up and needs to be cleaned out, or you'll be blowing seals and leaking oil all over.

thanks for the usefull informations

just cleaned the sieve in the tube exiting the flame trap last week , some oil got squezzed out the connection , was completly blocked . now cleaned the flame trap to , quiet a load of dirt came out .
looked behind the glovebox and cleaned the conntacts of the relays . now the overdrive light isn't on when i start the engine , was before , till it went off after a while , then i coud switch it on/off ,but nothing happend till the 4th gear came in , then it worked fine .
found a relay clicking in a 15sec rhytem , woud you exchange it or coud there be another reason or has it to do this ? attached a pic
there is a little to much oil in the transmisson , coud this cause the problem ,woud you flush the gearoil to be sure the rightone is in ?
thanks and kind regards oscar

easiest way to remove excess transmission fluid is to use a 'topsider' oil suction can to suck it out the dipstick tube. if your ATF Is brown or black, or smells burned, a full flush and replace is a good idea.

i'm not sure what that yellow relay is, that PN doesn't match anything I'm seeing here,
Volvo Relays
edit: oh, googling the part number says its the intermittent wiper relay.

hey pierce - you're the man ! thanks

the update : on the way to get the oil for the gear flush ,
suddenly a massive fuel consumtion , on top a noise
comming from the rear , sounding like a worn out bearing .
got the oil and a 12V soldering iron . resolderd few contacts
on the overdrivev-relay , working now ,just the relay ,will do
the gearbox flush the next days . checked the backwheels
bearings , wheels turning smooth and no wabble , did not seems
they making the noise . next morning the car starts terrible and
needed some time to run normal , still to much fuel . resolderd a
few contacts at the fuelpump-relay , next 50 km just fine and
normal fuel consumption . checked the oil at the endtransmission ,
to low , refilled , noise gone . this morning car won't start , tried
till the batterie was empty . ask a friend to bridge over , still won't
start . took off the sparkplugs , wet and black ,cleaned them ,
checked if they spark , they do , in again and it started like nothing
ever happend . went on a ride , the fuelclock seems to go down
to fast , but the car running good . after a 20 minutes ride ,
checked the themprature of the fuelpump-relay ,
quiet warm . guess it's an electric problem with the
fuelpump .
change the relay ?
one of the two fuelpump failling ?
what to do ?

thanks kind regards oscar
