I have a 1991 Volvo 740 with about 140,000 miles. It was a gift to me, and the person who gave it to me did the maintenance on it. It has been running fine, but recently I'm having trouble starting it and once it is running it runs ragged -- especially when stopped the rpms jump and the car sputters. A regular mechanic was unable to provide any suggestions -- before I take to import mechanic -- any ideas?</P>


Both the transmission fluid and some other fluid was a dark color instead of pink and yellow</P>

 

I have a 1991 740 turbo with 60,000 miles and a couple of mods (springs,intake,exhaust) but my volvo has trouble starting and it turned out to be the starter, check that out or the plugs may need changing but if you've done that might i suggest the throttle cable may be loose<IMG src=smileys/smiley1.gif border="0"></P>

 

The problem turned out to be: new spark plugs, injector, fuel press regulator, air temp sensor and at filter. It appears that the car was taken car of very well prior to my ownership. Thanks for your help[sm=itsok.gif]

 

I meant to say -- car was NOT taken care of prior to me!
