Default 1993 240 wagon no start issue.

Hi all,
I would appreciate help with a no start issue on my recent acquisitions. 1993 VOLVO 240 WAGON
was starting and running fine, for short time I have had it.
Engine cranks, I am getting spark, I replaced fuel relay, can hear it click on turn of key. Jumped relay connector and both pumps are working, just replaced both at beginning of this issue, hoping that was the problem. Fuses are not blown and I cleaned them up.
where do I look next?
TKS,
MIKE

Spray some Starting fluid into the air intake and try to start it. If it fires and even runs for a second or two, you have a fuel delivery issue. If it does not fire or try to run, you have a spark or timing issue. Once you know that, we can go from there.

Make sure the timing belt didn't break or slip time. You can remove the oil cap and see if the cam turns. If it does. Check and put the engine at tdc number one cylinder and see if the timing is correct with the belt sprocket. A bad mass air sensor will prevent starting and can flood the engine. Like Reply

The belt was just replaced by previous owner, I already took a quick look and it is indeed new, and tight but I will check timing too.
I will also look at the mass air sensor, if engine was flooded I would assume the plugs would be saturated?Reply

Have you checked for codes?I have not, I had battery disconnected, so thought they where lost. Would not hurt to check I suppose. Tks.Reply

Even if you don't have codes now. It might set one or more trying to start it. You can also run the diagnostic section of the test port and check various sensors on the engine. Like Reply

MikeSo I replaced the Mass Air sensor and the fuel pressure regulator.
Also the plugs and rotor where shot, gap was at 50, they where so worn and rounded. Replace plugs, wires, rotor and cap as well.
Started right up but now it runs rough for a few minutes then smooths out. The plugs could certainly have played a role but it was running, starting smooth prior. Is it possible a bad MAS senor that flooded the cylinders is causing a residual problem. Maybe the oxygen sensor is fouled? No codes yet, but I only started and let it run a few minutes, 2 times.
I am going to check the timing next.

Start it and let it run until the temp gauge shows normal operating temperature. Then shut it off, let it sit for about ten minutes and try restarting it to see how it starts warm/hot. I'm thinking you MAY have a bad engine coolant temperature sensor. These cars have two temperature sensors, one with one wire connected to it that operates the dashboard temperature gauge, and a 2 pin one that sends a temperature signal to the computer for cold and warm fuel mixture adjustment. A good replacement video can be found here

Also, do you know how to read and interpret the codes these cars can set? A great write up can be found here. https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/EngineOBDCodes.html

Good Luck

I will give that a go. I checked for codes, none yet.
