Default 1995 940 FM radio - not working

fm is all static, am crystal clear, fuses don't seem to be the issue. fm goes static randomly; can sound clear for 20 mins or 30 seconds. what can I do before I turn into a full blown human stereo? i appreciate any input-

If it comes on at all then the security code is OK. If the signal is dropping in and out, it's usually the antenna. In the wagon the antenna is in rear window with a connection subject to damage, then under that (behind the trim) a small booster amp that can go bad.

I hate these kinda responses- FM radio sucks anyway, why not just come on over to the AM team, or play CDs. D

If he's got to screw around with the antenna anyway, stick an FM modulator in line and turn it into an MP3 player.

I got my new car the radio would come on and it would display EEE the station would come and go occasionally playing a song or static. I called dealer got code inputed code after pulling the radio fuse to reset...btw if you put wrong code in (240 only?) you must leave the key on for a minimum of 2 hours to reset radio to try code again

do they have a device you can put inline with the antennae cable that has a ipod input?(not a radiophile)

There is an iPod adapter but it does not go in the antenna line, it goes in the back of the radio. The radio had a connector that can feed a cd changer, the adapter connects there and can be controled by the radio.

Also, most if not all Volvo cars after a certain year have the Anti-Theft system that requires you to enter a code of the stereo head looses power (these stereo heads have the quick release and flashing anti-theft light). This can happen from removing the head from the dash, disconnecting the battery, etc. The leaving the key on deal only happens if you enter the WRONG security code in 3 times. The stereo head will lock you out and you'll have to go through the 2 hour process of getting it unlocked and entering the correct code.

Also, it is possible that your antenna has come loose from the back of your stereo head or that your head is defective.

RSPI's right, you have lots of options depending on your setup. He's a little tutorial of what's out there. Note:all require you need a working radio.

As posted the dealer has your code based on the vin unless the radio has been changed out somewhere in the cars life. So then they use the radio serial number. The later proved problematic the last time I tried.

confused daugther: the security / antitheft code is different for each car. if your car still has the original factory stereo, a volvo dealer can look it up for you, but first, I'd carefully inspect the owners manual and other paperwork in the pouch normally stored in the glovebox, many owners either leave the card with the #### in there somewhere, or they pencil the number on the margin of one of the books somewhere. I've also seen it written on a sticker put on the top or bottom of the stereo.

me, I generally yank out those 20-30 year old cassettte decks that don't work very good any more anyways, and replace them with a nice new $100-120 Pioneer CD player with mp3/ipod input jacks, better FM section, and 25w x 4 power. most any decent auto stereo store will have the bezel to make it fit neatly in the factory hole, and the wiring harness adapter to plug into the volvo wiring, possibly bypassing the volvo amp buried under the dash somewhere, this all might add $20-30 to the price of the stereo.
