Default 2.4L L6 Diesel (VW) Powered Volvos

Hi, I am new, but I have an old 240 DL with the 2.4L diesel (na) by VW. The head is being rebuilt and it seems it would be a lot easier if instead of having to put the fwd camshaft gear on after mating to block, it could be on prior to install. That would require cutting a notch in the belt guard. Any reason not to do this? Other than catching my tie in it?

It would also mean I could start putting the guard on. What do you think?
