215's on a 240DL sedan
I did the calculator...it stated my mph would be off by 6mph at 60. It did not really address clearance issues with regards to rubbing on turns or wheel well with less than perfect struts . Thanks for the tip. Anyone out there ever tried 215's on a 240?
I've run 215/45/17's with no problem but 70's will be quite a bit taller but not nearly so wide. The tires you want to run are 2" larger in diameter, obviously the radius is 1" larger. There is plenty of vertical room fore and aft. To be certain, you can always do what I've done...mount one tire and try it on for size front and back. I think you'll be fine other than the speedometer being way off.
thanks...that is great info!
My volvo has the diamond alloy rims...took a look under the hub cap and it reads 7Jx15x20 on the rim...5 lugs. So to recap, cost concious consumer that I am...I was given sweet used set of 4 Michelins 215x70 R15. Currently running 185x65 R15's on a 1990 240DL. Does the rim info change anything regarding usage? Thanks alot

Meh, not really. If it's a concern, just do like I suggested. Just have a tire shop mount one tire and try it on both the rear and the front. The front is usually the only real issue but I think you'll be fine. That tire calculator site I gave you gives you dimensions of the tires as well as speedometer variances. You could use the site to compare width at the sidewall of the existing tire and the new tire. Should be about the same, I think. I confess to not being able to juggle tire size dimensions in my head...I need a cheat sheet or the web calculator myself.
the standard 14" on a 240 is 185/70-14, IIRC, and a wagon had 195/70-14. optional on the sedan was 195/60-15 and 205/60-15 is within reason. a 15" wagon would be 205/65-15.
215/70-15 sounds like a truck tire size. ok my old ford pickup uses 235/75-15 but still.
oh, the other number to watch is the load factor. 740/940 wagons should have 91 (like, 91H for H rated), but I forget what the weight factor is for a 240. whats the load factor on these biggies? I think it might be 87 or 88 for the sedan and 91 or 92 for the wagon (wagons have a higher payload capacity)

the 215's came off a Lincoln Town Car...kind of like a truck...the trunk is about as large as a truck bed. I may just flip them and go with your recommendations...fyi: as I look out the window at my 240...seems like a lot of empty wheel well space with 185/65R15's...Thanks everybody.
