1990 Volvo 740 Turbo wagon
I bought it a year ago replaced main fuel pump and overdrive solenoid. Runs great when cold but idles rough when it gets hot in the car and outside. And since i replaced the overdrive solenoid it will only shift gears when I let off the gas pedal otherwise it holds the RPMs and keeps climbing.I've never let it keep going past 4500 rpms. It also has a spot between 60 and 70 mph were if I'm cruising at that speed I either have to slightly have my foot on the pedal to stay in fourth gear. If I give it any thottle while in that speed range it drops into 3rd gear until I pass 70mph then I can let of and it will shift back to 4th. Can't figure out what is going on. I had a check engine light. Ran the code 1-3-1 Engine speed sensor to DI system missing on start. So I replaced the Crankshaft position sensor. I disconnected the battery. The check engine light went off and has stayed off for a week of driving. But the car runs the same as before minus the check engine light. Then replaced the Ignition control module and it started right up ran great for 2 minutes until it started to die at idle. Put the old one back in and now it runs just like it did before.
check the transmission 'kickdown' cable (thats not really what it is, but thats what everyone calls it). my kid's old 940SE, the cable was misrouted around the heater hoses, and being pulled too tight, so the tranny thought you were heavier on the throttle than you actually were, so it would shift real late.
rerouted it and readjusted the slack, and OMG, didn't need an expensive tranny service after all.... hah!
mostly, check the slack
i'm not suggesting yours is misrouted.
