Hi,

Its a Uk 1992 940 auto s.....

Never had a auto before so am un-used to the controls....

On the gear lever there is on the side, a small button, which turns of 4th gear and a orange arrow comes on, left side of dash.

When I got the car it was on and I was told it was just a doggy switch...

So i took the car for a spin and it didnt seem to over rev on any of the gears.

So i got it.

Other day I got onto a nice straight road and took it over 70, again didnt over rev but haven driven it for a 4 days i had got used to the gear change and could count 3 clear changes but after 40mph it didnt feel like it changed up at all.

On way back I pushed the little button loads of time and the light stayed on. Parked up and went to bed.

Got up today and the light was out! Had a couple of places to go and it was off all the time. Then after leaving the car 2 hours it was back and now its off.

So should I be worried? How do I find out if my 4th gear works?

Have I missed anything, just ask.

That would be your overdrive relay going bad which is pretty much normal with age on these cars.You will need to get a new relay and install it.

This sound right to you.... All day yesterday the light was on and off...

Have I got this right, when the light is out 4th gear is working, when it stays on its not working, not as i was told, its working whether the light is on/off?

Just am thinking of going back to dealer and asking them to get the part chnaged, as I was misinformed!

If I took out the relay would it default to on or off or just not start?

 

Overdrive works when the light is off.If you remove the relay it will never go into 4th it will always stay in 3rd gear.I would just get it replaced and you will be fine for a long while.
