Hi Spank, I moved your post to a new thread since it's a different user and different car. Sounds to me as if you have two different issues. The most common reason for OD not working is the OD relay. It is a 3" long rectangular white relay which can be accessed by removing the glove box. As for the transmission not shifting, we need a bit more information. Check your fluid level and let us know if it occurs randomly or more often when car cold or warm. It could be something as simple as readjusting the downshift cable or as major as the transmission dying a slow death. Also, let us know if the shifting problem is when you are slowing down or when you are accelerating. What sort of miles are on the car and what service if any has been done to it lately?

thanks for moving the post, the fluid level is ok, this occurs when the car is cold most of the time. problem happens when accelerating moving from 1st gear to second gear, would this hang-up with shifting cause the car to run hot?

Generally, a poor shifting transmission won't make a car overheat. Poor shifting when cold but the fluid is full generally means poor fluid pressure. Servicing the filter for the tranny might help, can't hurt. If it doesn't fix it, most likely it is time to swap in a fresher transmission.

One thing you might want to check regarding your overdrive light is your fuses. On my '89 245, when the #11 fuse blew, I lost 4th gear and the light came on.
This fuse also protects the rear window defroster, which turned out to be where the short was, inside the tailgate.
