Default 240 starting transmission issues....

Hello all,

My "new" 1992 240 GL is having a strange shifting out of park in the morning issue. After the motor is started, and you put your foot on the brake and want to shift out of park and into drive or reverse, the unlock button will not work for at least 30 seconds! This only happens the first time of the day, not when the car has warmed up. The trans lock button, is it vacuum operated? where does it get its vacuum from? have any of you folks had this problem?
Any suggestions?

Thanks, and God bless.

mike

its electric operated, and it sounds like either your brake pedal switch (same one that works the brake lights) or the park unlock solenoid is sticky.

Hey thanks for the reply, where is the park unlock solenoid, and how does one check it? and or replace it?

Thanks, Mike

I believe its right at the front of the shifter. you know, you stick your finger in through the brush at the shifter base and there's a little hook shaped lever inder there you pull up to manually unlock it ... it says 'shift unlock' right by it. I've used that to put my car in neutral before starting it so I could roll out of a parking place completely black late at night (to prevent any brake or reverse lights), this was at an astronomy star party when I left before others were ready to go... first I set the parking brake, and I used the parking brake to control my speed til I was clear of the field and could hit my lights.
