Default Help! '96 850 starting and running issues!

Hi members, I got my wife a used 850 this last September and it ran great until around a month and a half ago, our first cold stretch and the problems started. At first I thought it had a fuel pressure shortage, I pulled the line going to the injector rail and had plenty of pressure. For the heck of it, I pulled the fuel pump fuse, car started and ran until it ran out of fuel, upon replacing the fuse, the car would start running again until it would bog and quit, and then it would start again once I pulled the fuse out. So far I have replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel filter and the one computer box that controls engine control module and no luck.

Temperature indicator goes to half upon start-up cold and then drops to zero and the bogging/killing problems starts , then goes up when we get it restarted and if it stays up, it runs for a while fine. Both problems above seem to be tied in together with each-other and sometimes it doesen't start happening until we are 50 miles away from home and then it kills, we may or may not be able to get it started again.

Also, it now has problems intermittingly just cold starting it , it turns over and over , but doesen't fire until you go and pull the fuse out and then when you get it started and put the fuse back in, it will kill unless you hold down the gas.

I have heard that Bosh injectors can wear out and end up dumping too much fuel. Car has 138.000 miles on it and we have fallen in love with it, but do not have alot of money to spend.

Any information and ideas and past experiences would greatly be appreciated! Thanks! Phil M.

How about the coolant temp sensor and the thermostat have you checked those yet?

Also check the small wires at the battery terminal.

I am a poor volvo 850 owner as well , it might be worth it to take it to a volvo specific mechanic and have them plug in the computer and give it a visual lookover ... I am on my third 850 and usually anything that has been wrong with it has been simple and easy to fix once I took the time to get a mechanic to look at it . I just replaced my starter and battery a few weeks ago and since then everything has been running great !!!
